Direction: Identify what operation should be used in order for these equations to be
true.

2. 2𝑥 2 − 6 __ 𝑥 2 + 3 = 𝑥 2 − 9

3. 𝑥 2 + 6𝑥 + 8__−2𝑥 − 5 = 𝑥 2 + 4𝑥 + 3
1.2 Activity Proper
The students will form four groups and answer the “Polynomial Puzzle.

 Group yourselves into four (4)


 Answer the activity for today which is “Polynomial Puzzle”
 The group who will get the highest score will be the winner.
 Discussion and interaction among students about their answers on the
given activity.
 Record your results by group.

2. Analysis
 Ask the students what lessons will be tackle based on the activities that
we had.
 The topic is all about “Adding and Subtracting Polynomials”
 The students will read all the steps in adding and subtracting

polynomials.

Steps in adding and subtracting polynomials


Step 1: Remove all the parenthesis.
Step 2: Write in standard form if necessary.
Step 3: For subtraction, change the sign/s of the subtrahend.
Step 4: Combine like terms then add
 The teacher will give an example and apply all the steps.

1. Subtract7𝑥 + 6𝑥 2 + 4 from7𝑥 2 − 9𝑥 3 + 8
Solution:
−9𝑥 3 + 7𝑥 2 +8
6𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 4
−𝟗𝒙𝟑 + 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟕𝒙 + 𝟒

2. (4𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 𝑧) + (−3𝑥 + 10𝑦 − 3𝑧)


Solution:
4𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 𝑧
−3𝑥 + 10𝑦 − 3𝑧
𝒙 + 𝟔𝒚 − 𝟐𝒛

3. (6𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 8) − (4𝑥 3 − 5𝑥 − 3)
Solution:
6𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 8
−4𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 + 3
𝟐𝒙𝟐 + 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏𝟏

 Let the students answer the remaining examples.


4. Add: 7a+5b, 6a-6b+3c and -5a+7b+4c
5.(2a2 + 5a + 7) – (2 + 5a2 + a)

3. Abstraction
 Ask the students if there are questions with regards to the lesson.
 Explain again the steps in adding and subtracting polynomials.

4. Application
 Go back to your groups and answer the following word problems.
 Select a leader that will answer and discuss the given problems.

1. John received an allowance of 5x 2 + 2x − 5 and spent 3x 2 − x + 4 for his project.


How much money is left?
2. Find the surface area of the rectangle. (Hint: SA = 2l + 2w)

4. Subtract 2y 5 +3y 3 + 2+7 from 3y 5 -2y+4y 3 + y 4 +5

5. (5x 3 − 3x 2 +4)+ (6x 3 − 4x 2 -7)

V. Assignment
Direction: Solve the following
1. The sum of two expressions is 3x2 + 2xy – y2. If one of them is 2x2 + 3y2,
find the other.
2. Anna bought a pen which cost x 2 − 3x + 5 and a paper which cost 2x 2 −
8x + 1. How much did she pay?
