ADDITIONS TO EXISTING STRUCTURES

BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS

Any additions or alterations to existing structures must be in compliance with the
2016 California Existing Building Code (CEBC), California Code Of Regulations,
Title 24, Part 10.

 The CEBC is based on the 2015 International Existing Building Code

(IEBC), with modifications applicable in the State of California.

PRESCRIPTIVE COMPLIANCE METHOD

The 2016 CEBC adopts only one of three compliance methods of the 2015
International Existing Building Code (IEBC).

Additions or alterations to existing structures are covered by 2016 CEBC, Section

402.

Additions or alterations to existing structures must comply with the requirements

of the 2016 California Building Code (CBC) for new construction.

 The CBC is based on the 2015 International Building Code (IBC), with
modifications applicable in the State of California.

Gravity Loads

Any existing gravity load-carrying structural element for which an addition causes
an increase in design gravity load of more than 5 percent since original
construction shall be strengthened, supplemented, replaced or otherwise altered
as needed to carry the increased gravity load required by the CBC for new
structures.

 Existing structures include aboveground structures, anchor bolts, and

foundations.

 Observation: The existing structure may be used without modification if

the addition does not cause an increase in design gravity load of more
than 5 percent since original construction.

ADDITIONS TO EXISTING STRUCTURES

 Observation: Many refinery structures have already had previous additions

that exceed this 5 percent increase in gravity loads.

Lateral Loads

The existing structure and its addition acting together as a single structure shall
be shown to meet the wind and earthquake load requirements of the 2016 CBC.

 Existing structures include aboveground structures, anchor bolts, and

foundations.

 Exception: Any existing lateral load-carrying structural element whose

demand-capacity ratio considered with the additions since original
construction is no more than 10 percent greater than its demand-capacity
ratio with the additions ignored shall be permitted to remain unaltered. For
purposes of calculating demand-capacity ratios, the demand shall
consider applicable load combinations with the wind and earthquake load
requirements of the 2016 CBC.

 Observation: Many refinery structures have already had previous additions

or alterations that exceed this 10 percent increase in lateral loads demand
capacity ratios.
