WHO AM I PROJECT

As we examine the world through a literary lens, many themes will emerge. One focus
during this course is the individual’s role as a global citizen. We will be required to think
and live outside of ourselves in an effort to prepare to encounter all types of people, places,
and experiences. However, before we can begin, we must first have a good understanding of
our selves and our environment. This project is designed to help you develop strong self-
awareness and prepare you for the journey . It will help me get to know you as well.

As you work on this project, consider how you will apply the principles of creativity and
communication.

OBJECTIVES
 Produce coherent writing in paragraph / essay form that demonstrates
command of the conventions of Standard English grammar including
mechanics, diction, and syntax.
 Design a visual representation incorporating elements of visual rhetoric
that include typography, shape, and color.

COMPONENTS
1. THE PREWRITING QUESTIONNAIRE
Prewriting is important because it helps the writer generate ideas and be more
creative. This tool will help you brainstorm ideas for your collage and essay. As
you answer the questions, think about how you can represent them visually. What
things are important to you? What things have influenced you? What makes you
unique?

2. THE VISUAL REPRESENTATION

You will create a visual representation of who you are. You can choose the format: one-pager,
collage, digital poster, infographic. You must submit a hard copy of your visual (no Powerpoints
or websites). You must also incorporate at least two different types of materials into your design,
Acceptable materials include pictures, photos, drawings, wrappers, stickers, tickets, etc. All items
must represent you in some way.

I am assessing your ability to incorporate these elements. Some ideas to consider are the type of
font that suits the tone and mood for your visual, how you will choose and organize the items on
your collage, and how the finished product will demonstrate creativity.

3. THE PARAGRAPH / ESSAY

After creating your visual, think about how you created it. Who are you? What does the viewer
learn about you? Choose three topics (family, favorites, hobbies, etc) on which to focus and
write a one-two page paper that explains them. You may use anecdotal (a personal story)
evidence if you wish, but that should not be the focus of your paper.

I am assessing your ability to write effectively, which will help direct my approach to writing
instruction this term. Be sure to use your best spelling, grammar, and mechanics as well
as proper paragraph / essay format with multiple sentences / paragraphs.

You must type your essay in MLA format. If you do not have a computer or access to a printer,
please send me a message or leave a note on my desk. I will ensure you have access to one.
