EDUC 465: FIELD EXPERIENCE II
FIELD EXPERIENCE INSTRUCTOR NARRATIVE ASSESSMENT
INDIVIDUAL/GROUP LEARNING IN CLASSROOMS

Student’s Name: Natasha Van Driesten ID#: Date: April 27, 2017

School: Willow Creek Composite High School

Claresholm, Alberta
NOTE: This is not a letter of reference and will not be distributed by the WERKLUND SCHOOL OF EDUCATION to potential
employers., however potential employers may ask for this assessment from the student directly.

The purpose of this four-week Field experience is to focus on complex dimensions of individual/group learning in classrooms. The student’s
Learning Portfolio and his/her participation in the Field placement should provide evidence of an emerging ability to act thoughtfully in the
classroom and within the school community, and a preliminary understanding of learners and of the enactment of curriculum and pedagogical
relationships within the classroom environment. The Narrative Assessment should address the student teacher’s growth in their initial ability to
plan for, implement and assess learning. It should also comment on the student teacher’s growth in relation to the KSAs, including the student’s
own goal setting reflections and personal/professional assessment throughout the field experience. The Field Experience Instructor’s assessment
should also address the student’s overall participation in both collaborative and cohort learning assignments including D2L and the final
presentation assignment. The following report on the student’s work should be organized in relation to the questions: Where is the work
particularly strong? What could the student do to further his/her professional growth and development? You may also want to consider the
course outcomes as a method of organizing the assessment.

To whom it may concern:

It was a pleasure to observe Natasha Van Driesten teach junior high students at Willow Creek
Composite. Her lessons were very well planned with attention paid to special accommodations,
diversity in learning, appropriate assessment rubrics and even technological contingencies.
The lessons flowed well and they were very engaging and creative. They were appropriately aligned
to the Alberta Program of Studies. There were no classroom management issues. Transitions were
handled easily. There was a mutual tone of respect and dignity between Natasha and the students.
Natasha taught the same lesson twice on both of my visits and, in both cases, she improved her
lessons the second time around. Upon reflection afterward, Natasha demonstrated outstanding
skills of reflection and self-analysis. She was eager to hear of any suggestions for improvement
and she included the suggestions in succeeding lessons.
With respect to the interaction between Natasha and her Partner Teacher, there was a remarkable
tone of ease and mutual respect. Upon entering the school for the first time, I was informed by more
than one person that Natasha had already made a positive impact on her classroom and the school.
During the observations it appeared that Natasha was very much at ease in the classroom. Even
though she later admitted that she was nervous about junior high, it did not show up during the
classes. Good planning and creativity had much to do with that. For example, one of her language
arts lessons was about poetry, a difficult subject to teach in junior high. Her lessons included three
rotating centers. They were very creative and well accepted by the students. The positive comments
from the boys were affirmation enough as to the success of the lessons.
To sum up, Natasha has demonstrated above average teaching skills. She is very professional in
her approach. I do not hesitate to recommend that she move to the next level and I predict she will
become a very good teacher and a credit to the profession.
