PART-3 (5×6 Marks)

3.1 [CO5]Describe the function of Governor with suitable diagram. How does it differ from that of a
Flywheel?

3.2 [CO1]The areas above and below the mean torque line in a T-θ diagram of a multi cylinder engine are as
follow (in mm2)
-30, 374, -242, 300, -310, 234, -362, 251, -215

The diagram has been drawn to a scale of 1mm = 500 Nm vertically and 1 mm = 30 horizontally. The
mean speed of the engine is 600 rpm, if the radius of gyration is 700 mm. Determine the mass of
flywheel. The fluctuation of speed is limited to 3.6% of the mean speed.

3.3 Derive a relation for the turning moment at the crankshaft in terms of piston effort and angle turned by
the crank.
3.4 Three masses of 8 kg, 12 kg and 15 kg attached at radial distances of 80mm, 100 mm and 60mm
respectively to a disc on shaft are in complete balance; determine the angular positions of the masses of
12 kg and 15 kg relative to the 8 kg.

3.6 The turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 2.2 tons and rotates at 1800 rpm CW when viewed from aft. The
radius of gyration of the rotor is 320 mm. Determine the gyroscopic couple and its effects when the
I. Ship turns right at a radius of 250 m with speed of 25 km/h.
II. Ship pitches with the bow rising at angular velocity of 0.8 rad/sec.
3.7 Each arm of a proell governor is 240 mm long and each rotating ball has a mass of 3 kg. the central load
acting on the sleeve is 30 kg . The pivots of all the arms are 30mm from the axis of rotation .when the
sleeve of the governor is in mid position , the extension link of the lower arm are vertical. In this position
the radius of path of rotation of the masses is 195 mm, the vertical height of the governor is 190 mm and
the governor speed is 180 rpm. Determine the lengths of the extension links and tension in the upper arm.
