I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

 Define quartile; and
 Solve for the quartiles.

II. Subject Matter:

STATISTICS

III. Learning tasks

Teacher’s Activities Learner’s Activities
A. Routine
1. Prayer:
May I ask Lainezel to lead the
prayer.
2. Greetings Good morning ma’am!
Good morning class!
3. Checking of attendance
 Who’s absent? None ma’am!
B. Review
 What was our topic last It’s all about median ma’am.
meeting?
 What is median? Median is the middle value in a series of
values arranged from smallest to largest.
 Do you have any questions
or clarifications regarding None ma’am!
our last lesson?
C. Motivation:
Let’s have a group activity:
Activity # 1: SPELL ME
Instruction: the students will be
divided into two groups; each
member of the group will hold a cut-
outs letters. They will be used it to
form a word that corresponds to the
correct answer.

Given the following scores/data: They will come up with the following
Find the median. words:
1. 2 3 5 7 9 10 11 1. 7(SEVEN)
2. 3 4 4 5 6 8 8 2. 5(FIVE)
3. 1 3 3 4 6 6 7 8 8 3. 6(SIX)
4. 1 2 5 7 9 11 11 13 14 15 16 17 4. 11(ELEVEN)
5. 5 8 9 9 12 13 5. 9(NINE)
D. Presentation:
Let me introduce to you the measures
of position for ungrouped data

Given the samples of data:

1. (1 2 5 7 9 11 11 13 14 15 16
17)
2. (1 2 5 7 9)
3. (13 14 15 16 17 8 12 13 12 5 7
91 3 7 27 16 7 31 30 21 25 30
36 42 53 5 7 12 14)
1. N = 12
 How many elements are there in 2. N = 5
number 1, 2 and 3? 3. N = 29

 Based from the examples, who can Student 1: If the number of elements is less
define what is ungrouped data? than 30, then it is ungrouped data.

Very good!

E. Development of the Lesson:

 When you heard the word quartile
Student 2: Quartiles are the values which
what comes into your mind?
divide the distribution into four equal parts.

Let’s have another activity to continue

what you have done earlier.

Given the example of ungrouped data:

12 5 22 30 7 36 14 42 15 53 25 65.

 Who would like to arrange our data

Student 3: 5 7 12 14 15 22 25 30 36 42 53 65
into ascending order?
 Will you find the median of the data? 22+25
Student 4: median = = 23.5
 What is the median of the lower half? 2
12+14
 How about the upper half? Student 5: median = 2
= 13
36+42
Student 6: median = = 39
2

5 7 12 14 15 22 25 30 36 42 53 65
𝑄1 𝑄2 𝑄3

Class, now observed the data.

 Will you define again the quartile Student 7: Quartiles are the three values
using our example? namely 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3 which divide the
arranged data into four equal parts.

Any question class? None ma’am!

Another examples for you to work
on.
1. 25 30 36 42 53 5 7 12 14 15 22

Student 8: 5 7 12 14 15 22 25 30 36 42 53
Student 9: 𝑄2 = 22

Student 10: 𝑄1 = 12

Student 11: 𝑄3 = 12

2. 2 1 3 7 27 16 7 31 30 21 Student 12: 1 3 7 7 16 21 27 30

Student 13: 𝑄2 = 16

Student 14: 𝑄1 = 5

Student 15: 𝑄3 = 28.5

Any question class?
None ma’am.
F. Practice Exercise
The score of 10 students in their
Mathematics quiz are as follows:
10 11 9 12 14 15 8 7 6 4 Student 16: 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 14 15

Student 17: 𝑄2 = 9.5

Student 18: 𝑄1 = 7

Student 19: 𝑄3 = 12
G. Generalization:
 What is quartiles? Student 20: Quartiles are the three values
namely, 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3 which divide the
arrange distribution into four equal parts.

 What are the three values of the Student 21: 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3

variable that divides the arranged
distribution into four equal parts?

 How to find quartiles for ungrouped Student 22: Find the median/𝑄2 so that, we
data? can find the value for 𝑄1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3 .

IV. Evaluation
1. There are 12 data values
51 55 57 61 62 67 51 70 72
73 74 58 69
Find the 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3 .

2. Given the grades of 15 Students in

their Mathematics subject are:
87 89 81 83 84 85 87 90 91 80
85 88 93 95
Find the 𝑄1 , 𝑄2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑄3 .

I. Assignment:

Aqua Running has been promoted as a method for cardiovascular conditioning for the
injured athlete as well as for the others who desire a low impact aerobic workout. A study
reported in the Journal of Sports Medicine investigated the relationship between exercise
cadence and heart rate by measuring the heart rates 20 healthy volunteers at a cadence of 48
cycles per minute (a cycle consisted of two steps).
The data are listed here:
87 109 79 80 96 95 90 92 96 98
101 91 78 112 94 98 94 107 81 96
Find the lower and upper quartiles of the data.
