The SKF Spindle repair centers are
presently located in Sweden, Germany,
USA, Austria, France and Japan. As a
result of this, you will get your spindle
service in a short time, wherever you are.

reconditioning, from bearing replace-
ment to shaft and nose restorations, per-
formance upgrade and analyses.

Spindles Milling Spindles
SKF Machining Centre spindles are
designed for milling, tapping and drilling
operations. High stiffness and accuracy
are important factors for these spindles.
One key issue is to keep the temperature
low, though obtaining higher power over
a defined speed range. SKF can offer
you motor integrated spindles with
speeds up to 30 000 r/min.
For belt driven machining centre
applications, SKF can offer you compact
and economic solutions, where the spin-
dle performance has been improved to
speeds up to 28 000 r/min.
The SKF high speed milling spindles are
used in several applications, like in the
aircraft industry, where it is usual with
high cutting removal rates. The spindles
are also common in die mould manufac-
turing, where fine surface finishes are
required. These applications require
capacity to cut both in aluminum and
hardened steel. The spindles are also
widely used when cutting advanced
geometries such as thin walled sections,
which require a well balanced spindle.
For high speed milling applications,
SKF offers top level technology with a
system of sensors, automatic clamping
and cooling through the shaft. We pro-
vide you with a complete milling spindle
system for speeds up to 42 000 r/min.
The main characteristics of a spindle for
turning are high cutting forces, high pro-
ductivity and flexibility. The SKF turning
spindle is designed to withstand the high
cutting forces. The design is robust and
space saving. The spindles are designed
to have a thermally stable behaviour.

spindles will assure you a good surface
quality.
SKF provides you with a wide range
of turning spindles, motor integrated or
with external drive. The motor integrated
spindles have speeds up to 10 000 r/min
and the belt driven up to 16 000 r/min.
SKF Grinding Spindles SKF Gas Bearing
Like the spindles used in SKF's plants Spindles
for the manufacturing of bearings, high
frequency grinding spindles are designed
for applications with high operating
speeds and high precision. SKF's stand-
ard range of grinding spindles have a
simple and robust design. The main
speed range is from 10 000 to
100 000 r/min.
When spindle applications call for
extremely high precision and speed, gas
bearings might be your solution. These
bearings are not exposed to any wear,
need no lubrication and are environmen-
tally friendly. The features of gas bearing
spindles are high dynamic stiffness and
speeds. They also have the ability of fine
finishing together with a long service
life. The SKF gas bearing spindles are
characterised by very high accuracy, with
a non repetitive run out of 0,05 µm. The
main speed range is from a few revolu-
tions up to over 100 000 r/min.
The SKF gas bearing spindles are typ-
ically used in high precision machinery
such as silicon dicing, polishing for cam-
era prisms, cutting contact lenses to final
shape, profile grinding and turning for
fine finishing.
SKF Magnetic Bearing
Spindles
For the future, SKF is currently working
on magnetic bearing spindle technology.
Magnetic bearing spindles may be used
for grinding and milling operations with
speeds up to 100 000 r/min. The major
advantage of magnetic bearings for
spindles is the non metallic contact be-
tween the bearing surfaces. This results
in higher speed capacity and reduced
maintenance.
The features of magnetic bearing spin-
dles are the advanced digital control and
real time information diagnostics, which
offer improved cutting finish and process
optimisation.
SKF is also in the development of
high performance spindles with a combi-
nation of gas and magnetic bearings,
which will offer you additional benefits
in cutting precision.

Calculation model to find the deflection modes and critical speeds of the spindle

One of the most important factors to pro-
duce a spindle, working trouble free, is
to have control over the vibrations.
Designing a spindle, SKF accomplishes
accurate calculations and tests to min-
imize the vibrations of the spindle.
During the design phase, we calculate
critical speeds, deflection modes, un-
balance response and thermal effects of
the spindle.

methods together with powerful calcula-
tion tools makes it possible to simulate
the behaviour of the spindle.
With SKF´s vibration analysis equip-
ment for condition monitoring, we meas-
ure the spindle response at a final test to
verify the calculations. All this to ensure
you a spindle with a long and trouble
free service life.
