3. Model a presentation for your students and/or model the process of reading
and analysing an “actualité”, using the Graphic Organizer provided, then of
preparing to share your article and learning with the class. Ideally, have
them use success criteria to evaluate your work.
4. Optional: Provide a choice of two to four articles to the class and have each
student “practice” drawing out the pertinent facts, as they will for a unique
article soon after. Go over with the students who read each article what they
found and clarify any misconceptions or answer questions that they might
have. (I like to have them do this step individually, even though there may
be several students sitting near one another working on the same article. I
stress that the best practice comes from actually doing the work themselves,
in this case. There are tons of other collaborative opportunities in my class.)
6. You will need to have other learning opportunities ready for students, for any
days that someone is unexpectedly absent or a particular topic falls flat. Not
having actualité discussions planned every day help with make-up flexibility.
9. Be clear with students (and parents) regarding your expectations for what
work may be done at home and what must be done at school, for your
assessment.
