GASP’s Spring Show Week 3: Inspiration and Design Prep Day

Date: 1/30/19

Enrichment Specialist:
Annmarie Bustamante

Grade: 1-2

Date Implemented: Spring

(At least 4 Weeks Before Spring Showcase)

Activity Description:
This is the 3rd in a 6 part series. This week students will form teams, gather inspiration
from pinterest boards/magazines/approved blogs and apparel sites/fashion show
videos. Next I will tech a brief intro to Draping/Pattern Making Lesson

Warm up:
Students will be shown how to create a simple A-line skirt with a draping method and
through measuring themselves and pattern making. They will each create a plan for
what they will design. It will fall in the can choose to design with either method.

Next, they will design and cut out all of their garments. If they have time to sew, they
can begin, but my main goal will be to have all the fabric cut out and ready to go for next
week.

1st Activity:
They will look for their own inspiration from a quick team Pinterest pin session!
Meaning, they will choose 10 images from a safe image search engine, Pinterest, and
as a group, choose the mood of the apparel lines.
Second Activity:
They will have already chosen a theme last class. Themes examples include: FairyTale,
Sporty, Rock & Roll, Formal, Cavewoman etc. whatever they plan out and all agreed to.

Today the teams will decide their color scheme. This will that include 5 colors. They’ll
decide which fabric to choose as a team, and start draping or pattern making their
collections. They won’t do any sewing in this class, but will have all fabric cut out and
ready to sew next week. If they don’t finish there are other times I can lend myself to
sewing help.

Additional Sew Time:

Students will also have all day on Wednesdays to complete any hand sewing and
Fridays (after snack) to use the sewing machines with my assistance/ supervision.

Objectives:

1. Teach basic draping and pattern making.

2. Help them imagine up their designs.

3. Help them see that they can be a valuable part of a community/team project.
(Continuing Theme)

Reaching Objectives:

1. Show sewers a short lesson on how to make the same exact skirt for
themselves, but with two different design methods. We will cover the math, and
art sides of the students brains as they learn to drape and pattern make.

2. Get them inspired by fashion and art. Give them materials to draw. Assist them in
draping or pattern making. Our goal by the end of the day will be for them to
mark, and accurately cut out their apparel creations. If they don’t get this far, they
can work on it Wednesday or Friday before or after snack.
3. They will need to learn to discuss differing ideas without hurting each other’s
feelings. I imagine this will take a lot of practice, but is paramount in them
creating art as a team. We will encourage each member of a team to give input
for the group’s designs. Students will practice how they can encourage each
other, give constructive criticism, and keep open an mind.
