Class

A) SYNOPSIS:

GEODESY 1 introduces students to the field related with geodesy and provides knowledge of the reference surface in geodesy, ellipsoidal geometry
characteristics, datum in geodesy, geodesy coordinate system and computation on an ellipsoids.

B) COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO):

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Explain the geodetic concept in land surveying field. [C2, PLO1]


2. Apply the calculation to obtain the required data in Geodesy. [C3, PLO1]
3. Demonstrate good communication skill in oral presentation in group on assigned topic within as stipulated time frame. [A3, PLO3]

1.0 INTRODUCTION TO GEODESY (4 hours)

1.1.3 Describe the objectives and functions of geodesy.
1.1.4 Identify the disciplines of geodesy.

2.0 REFERENCE SURFACE IN GEODESY (2 hours)


2.1. Understand the reference surface in geodesy.
2.1.1 Explain the reference surfaces of topography, geoid and ellipsoid
2.1.2 Describe the relationship between its reference surface in geodesy
2.1.3 Explain the height above Mean Sea Level (MSL), ellipsoid height and geoid height.

3.0 PROPERTIES OF THE ELLIPSOID REVOLUTION (8 hours)


3.1. Understand the ellipsoid revolution
3.1.1 Describe geometry of the ellipsoid
3.1.2 Describe the properties of the rotational ellipsoid
3.1.3 Derive the ellipse equations
3.2 Understand the properties of the ellipsoid
3.2.1 Explain the meridian ellipses, types of latitudes, longitude and azimuth in geodesy
3.2.2 Explain the radius of curvature on meridian ellipse and prime vertical
3.2.3 Explain the normal section curve and geodesic line
3.2.4 Explain the spherical excess
3.3 Apply the calculation on properties of the ellipsoid
3.3.1 Calculate the radius of curvature on meridian ellipse
3.3.2 Calculate the radius of curvature on prime vertical
