1.0 SCOPE
This specification covers general requirements of the design, manufacture and testing of Strain
(Stay) Insulators for low voltage and medium voltage overhead distribution lines.
The Strain (Stay) Insulators shall be in accordance with the latest editions of the standards
specified below and amendments thereof.
2
CEB Standard 057:1997
The Strain Insulators shall be made of good commercial grade wet-process porcelain. They shall
be sound, free from defects and smoothly glazed.
5.1 Dimensions
The dimensions and shapes of the Strain Insulators covered by this specification are given in the
attached drawing No. DS&S/057/97 and shall be in accordance with the standard specified.
The Strain Insulators shall have the Electrical Mechanical Characteristics conforming to ANSI
C.29.1 (1982).
5.3 Materials
The Strain Insulators shall be made of good commercial grade wet-process porcelain and the
colour of glazing Shall be "Brown".
5.4 Construction
The Strain Insulators shall be provided with two transverse holes for the insertion of stay wires
used for pole supporting. The two transverse holes shall be smoothly rounded with as large a
radius as practicable to present an even bearing surfaces to the stay strand loop.
The surface of the Strain Insulators shall be effectively glazed except for the points on which the
porcelain is supported during firing which may be left unglazed.
The design shall be such that stresses due to expansion and contraction in any part of the
insulator shall not lead to deterioration.
Quality Assurance System conforming to ISO 9002 shall be followed in the manufacture of Strain
Insulators.
The Bidders shall furnish documentary evidence that the Strain Insulator manufacturers have

i. Verification of dimensions.
x. Thermal Test.
The test certificates shall clearly identify the item concerned showing the manufacturer's identity,
reference No. and basic parameters.
The Type Test Certificates shall be from a Recognized Independent Testing Authority acceptable to
the Purchaser.
Failure to furnish the above particulars and sample Stay Insulators as stipulated in Clause 8.0 will
result in the offer being rejected.
Three samples of Strain (Stay) insulator offered shall accompany the bid to facilitate analysis and
evaluation.
The selected Bidder shall make necessary arrangements for inspection by an Engineer appointed
by the purchaser and also to carry out in his presence necessary Acceptance/Sample Tests on the
material offered.
9.1 Sampling
Five Insulators will be selected from a batch of 1000 Nos. to carry out the Acceptance /Sample Test
as stipulated in Clause 9.2 below.
If any of the Insulator fail to satisfy the specified requirement another five sample insulators will
5
CEB Standard 057:1997
be selected from the same batch and said test will be repeated.
If any of the insulator from the second sample fail to meet the specified requirement, all 1000
Insulators from that batch will be rejected.
a) Wet power frequency flash over voltage test as per 4.34 of ANSI C.29-1 1982.
The Technical Literature with complete dimensional Drawing of the Strain (Stay) Insulator and the
Routine Tests report ( Electrical Tests and Mechanical Tests carried conforming to ANSI C29.1, and
Visual Examination & Porosity Test carried as stipulated below at the time of manufacture) shall be
furnished with the offer.
The colour of the Strain Insulator shall be as stipulated Clause 5.4 above. The areas
exposed shall be covered by a smooth hard glaze free from cracks and other defects.
Fragment from the insulator shall be tested in accordance with ANSI C29.1.
