ambitious target that will require a four-fold growth in the sector. The country has
installed capacity over 50GW of renewable capacity as of December 2016, 57% of
which is wind. The 2022 target includes 60GW of large and medium-scale grid-
connected solar power projects, 60GW of wind, 40GW of solar rooftop projects, 10GW
of bio-power and 5GW of small hydro. As a result, renewable energy in India has seen
more fervent investment, capacity building activity and a steeper fall in per unit energy
supply tariff than any other energy source in the country, with the REWA tender
driving it to a new low of Rs 2.97 (4.4 cents) recently.
This has notably resulted in a 157% increase in solar power capacity addition during
FY2015 and FY2016, and the highest ever wind power capacity addition in FY2016,
which totalled 3,300MW taking India to the fourth position in overall wind installation
in the world. India has now achieved 28.6% of its 2022 renewable energy installation
target of 175GW.
Cumulative installed capacity as of December 31st, 2016:
WIND: 28,700.44MW
SOLAR: 9,012.66MW
SMALL HYDRO: 4,333.85MW
BIOPOWER: 7,856.94MW
WASTE TO POWER: 114.08MW
Last year was nothing less than phenomenal for the renewable energy industry
globally, and nowhere was the sentiment more palpable than the podium at
Renewable Energy India, which saw the three-day packed event brimming with
optimism!
Supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the Solar Energy
Corporation of India (SECI), the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA)
and the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), the Expo’s 2016 edition reiterated
its status as Asia’s premier and most influential renewable energy forum.
Rajneesh Khattar, Group Director, UBM India on REI 2016: “Much can be said about
the year-on-year growth for REI, but let me add it is all a reflection of the confidence
the industry has reposed in us. The Indian growth story needs not be validated any
longer and renewable energy is surely a huge success story for the entire Indian
business landscape, this being the outcome of favourable government policies, the
international consensus on green energy and the spirit of the Indian entrepreneurs.
REI has now comfortably gained the status as the most trusted and anticipated show
for this industry and it’s my sincere belief that the coming years and the next decade
will solidly build upon the trust and the goodwill that we have so passionately
cultivated in the last ten years!”
Organized by UMB India, RenewX is where South India’s renewable energy sector
meets. RenewX 2017 is a platform built to accelerate the growth of South Indian
Renewable Energy and contribute to the country’s sustainable economic
development. The 2015 edition of RenewX, organized under the theme “A Sunrise
Region that tamed the Wind,” notably saw the esteemed participation of 45 speakers,
243 conference delegates and 4,230 trade visitors.
Now hosting the world’s biggest solar plant in a single location: Adani’s 648MW
Kamuthi solar plant in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India is a growing renewable
energy destination, with as many as seven solar parks totalling 7,200MW planned in
the region. Supported by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the Indian
Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), the Telangana New & Renewable
Energy Development Corporation (TNREDCL) and the National Small Industries
Corporation (NSIC), RenewX will provide an excellent platform for organisations to
capitalise on and penetrate the lucrative South Indian renewable energy market. For
