¿Qué es un gráfico de reducción de scrum y por qué es tan importante en Scrum?

Los equipos de scrum odian la burocracia innecesaria. No les gustan las reuniones, no les
gusta el papeleo interminable. Sólo quieren centrarse en hacer el trabajo. Sin embargo, un
informe que felizmente producirán es el gráfico de quema de scrum. Lo que podría hacerte
pensar que el gráfico de burndown debe ser un informe realmente bueno , y estarías en lo
correcto.

¿Por qué scrum burndown charts?

Un gráfico de quema de scrum es muy simple. Se traza el tiempo restante contra el trabajo
restante. La idea es ver, de un vistazo, cuándo es probable que esté completo. Usando un
proyecto de ejemplo que consta de 250 puntos de historia y 20 iteraciones, un gráfico de
quema probable se vería así:

Un gráfico básico de quema de scrum

El eje vertical indica el trabajo restante (titulado Puntos de historia en esta imagen) y el eje
horizontal indica el tiempo (titulado Iteraciones en esta imagen). Si dibujó una línea imaginari
entre el punto de inicio y el promedio de los puntos trazados, obtendría su punto final
proyectado. Si lo hace en el gráfico anterior, verá que no se completará con la iteración 20. D
hecho, ¡el punto final no aparece en el gráfico!

Como puedes imaginar, el gráfico perfecto va de la parte superior izquierda a la parte inferior
derecha en una línea recta. Esto supone que la parte superior izquierda es el punto inicial y q
la parte inferior derecha es el punto final. En este gráfico, la parte superior izquierda es la
iteración 0 con 250 puntos de historia. La parte inferior derecha es la iteración 20 con 0 punto
de historia. En el siguiente gráfico, he dibujado la línea ideal en azul.

Está claro que, casi desde el principio, el equipo no alcanzó su objetivo. A partir de la iteració
8, se estaban desviando del curso. En la iteración 12, las cosas se pusieron tan mal como
podían, pero en la iteración 13, se completó mucho trabajo. La belleza de la gráfica es que m

narrativa es innecesaria. La gráfica hace que la verdadera posición sea totalmente transpare
para cualquiera.

Tabla de quema de scrum = claridad

Crear y mantener un gráfico de burndown es la simplicidad en sí misma. A menudo los verá
dibujados a mano y pegados a la pared en el lugar de reunión diario del scrum. Proporciona
una gran cantidad de información de manera concisa, transparente y de fácil comprensión. ¡N
es de extrañar que los equipos de scrum los amen!

Un último pensamiento ...

Si hay una cosa que el gráfico de reducción de scrum básico no se muestra bien, son los
cambios en los requisitos. Imagine el escenario: su cliente, al ras del éxito de su proyecto
Scrum, ha decidido agregar historias de usuario adicionales. Después de la iteración 8, cuan
el equipo de desarrollo completó 10 puntos de usuario, el cliente agregó algunas nuevas
historias de usuarios que también sumaron 10 puntos de historia. ¿Efecto neto en el gráfico d
burndown? Ningún progreso indicado, como se muestra arriba.

No le sorprenderá saber que esta es una situación común en los proyectos Scrum y que hay
una variación en el gráfico de quemado que lo maneja. Pero, voy a dejar eso hasta otro
artículo.

Buen artículo ... me interesa saber qué piensa sobre cómo el gráfico de quemados maneja
los puntos de historia recién agregados.

Has golpeado el principal problema de la simple tabla de quemados allí mismo. Se han
realizado varios intentos para mejorar el gráfico básico de quema, pero tienen dos
problemas principales. En primer lugar, a Scrum no le preocupa cuánto tiempo tomó
algo, sino cuánto trabajo le queda. En segundo lugar, cualquier ajuste al gráfico de
burndown hace que la presentación de informes sea más complicada.
Dicho esto, Mike Cohn, del software Mountain Goat, ha escrito un artículo sobre las
tablas alternativas de Burndown . Soy bastante parcial al primer suplente que él
propone.

It’s been on my mind to add some more detail to this article. It was originally conceived
to provide help to those wishing to sit the PSM I assessment. In that regard, it’s great.
However, in terms of burndown charts themselves, it could certainly stand some extra
detail.

I thought Development Team does not estimate remaining ALL stories to assign points, and in
practice not beyond 2 Sprint (immediate next sprint) and partial (following to next sprint) as
complete clarity might not be available.
In that sense I do not think Burn Down Chart provides valuable information.
Should Development Team assign Estimation point as soon as user story hits Backlog to
have a right burn down chart?

Hi John Paul
You’re right when you say that Development Teams usually produce fine-grained
estimates for the next one to two sprints only. However, because relative size estimation
is so easy, it’s not uncommon for Development Teams to estimate all of the items in a
backlog so that the Product Owner can maintain a Release Burndown Chart or a Product
Roadmap. That’s what this article refers to.
For Sprints, the Development Team will probably maintain a Sprint Burndown Chart
where they might plot remaining task hours versus remaining days.
Burndown Charts exist only if the Scrum Team see value in them,

equivalent to a sprint, and there is no Sprint named 0. Correct me if I am wrong.

The terms iteration and sprint are often used interchangeably. However, in scrum, we
always talk about a sprint.
Sprint 0 is often used to describe preparatory activities such as choosing the
environment, infrastructure, architecture, etc.

However, the purpose of a sprint is to produce a potentially releasable product

increment. A sprint would never consist only of preparatory items of work. Hence why the
term is often disliked.

hi,
I have a question – the article says that the burn down chart doesnt tell you about change in
requirements. Lets say 10 story points are added then shouldnt the graph slope downward by
equivalent of 10 story points as opposed to being flat. The team has anyway burned down 10
story poonts right?

Hello
In fact, the chart will slope upwards because you have added more work.
When I say that the chart doesn’t tell you about a change in requirements, I mean that
you cannot infer anything from the chart about whether work was added or removed. For
example, if a chart is flat, it might indicate that no work was done or, that work equal to
the amount done was also added. The chart won’t indicate which of those circumstances
is true. It simply indicates the amount of work remaining.

Not sure of your last para title “One final thought …” in the article.
Shouldn’t adding an extra 10 story points to the product backlog also increase the Y axis
length hence reflecting the true picture of progress in the new chart?
If 10 story points are existing to the total count in product backlog then adding it to an existing
iteration will only show good progress made towards meeting the goal

You hit at the core of what a burndown chart is for. It simply shows the amount of work
remaining at a given point in time. Used that way, it is useful to us in determining how
likely we are to meet our goals. If we want to show things like ‘work added’ or ‘work
removed’ then what we have is not a burndown chart but something else.
A name I’ve heard used is an ‘adapted burndown chart’ or ‘alternative burndown chart’.
Mike Cohn describes it rather well in his article on the alternative release burndown
chart.

This language/workflow does not follow scrum, only the product owner is to add user stories
to the backlog.

Interesting thought but consider that, while the Product Owner has the final say on
content and ordering of the product backlog but they don’t have to create items and they
don’t have to be a gate before others add items either.
