In this Harvard newspaper article, Berger gives insight into what percentage
of their student body is affected by poor mental health and how the university
reaches out to help these students. Using data from a school wide survey and
statements from UC and Harvard personnel, the author discusses the awareness of
mental health resources on all types of campuses. The data given in the article
conveys that a large group of students at Harvard are either diagnosed with a
mental health disorder or simply have concerns with their mental state. Most of
these students have enough trouble opening up in the first place, so the fact that
they don’t know where to get help only makes it worse for them. This article easily
conveys that many students deal with poor emotional health, which is the

background for my project. Because most students aren’t given any resources or let
alone the knowledge that there is help available, it becomes extremely difficult to
cope. The data given will help support my research on what resources are made
available for students on their campuses and whether these resources are promoted
or not.

In this article, Carter argues that student stress leads to devastating effects on
the quality of life. She uses research on depression and exhaustion to show just
how much school has a toll on the emotional health of most hard working teens.
More than ever, students of all ages are struggling with stress due to school,
leading them to other terrible outlets. Teen suicide has become a huge statistic, and
be a happy experience for students, but in most cases, it’s the complete opposite. I
myself know many hard working students that deal with stress and all kinds of
other mental health issues. I hope that through my project, I can help at least one
student struggling with any disorder, ultimately lowering the high numbers shown
in the article.

seen as one of the most stressed groups. Being that college is such a huge step in
life, it’s no surprise that first years in this environment are worried about gaining
so much responsibility while still dealing with the basic struggles of school itself.
Another aspect adding onto this said stress is the financial load placed on almost

In this NYU publication, it is made clear that student stress stems from many
different aspects of high school, including college admissions. The data given on
stresses out students most. According to the article, school work, parent
expectations, extra curriculars, and college are some of the main causes of stress in
most high school students. Students are pressured extremely to do well and
advance into college, which only adds more to their load of stress in not only their
school lives, but their important social lives. This resource provides a great deal of
data on different types of high school students and their stress, which is the group
of students I will be focusing on helping with my project. I want to find ways for

In this article, author Winner Yip discusses the issue of the prevalence of
stress in most college students due to their immense responsibilities and the large
transition from high school life into real life. Yip uses statistics from a UCLA
study to show how many college students on average suffer from severe stress and
stress has on these said students. Stress might be a usual aspect of life, but in
school it’s basically more inevitable than ever. School, but especially college,
comes with great responsibility and self discipline, which can be difficult to
manage all at once. Mental health issues that stem from this stress can affect one’s
emotional and physical state, so it’s crucial to find ways to easily de-stress when
necessary. This source provides information on why it’s so important to have ways
to cope with stress, which I can use as research for the background of my project. I
want to find specific ways that almost every student can combat stress in times of
hardship.
