1. General
1.1. Installation of WPREMET Software on a PC:
Select the drive where the CD with the WPREMET Software is located and double-click on
the icon “WPremet 4.x”
Please note that even though our Operator Manual is constantly updated, the screenshots
can show different WPREMET Software versions.
Now double-click on the folder “PREMET Software 4.10” and the next screen appears:
Now double-click on the icon „SETUP.EXE“ and the following screen appears:
If no special directory is needed for the installation of this software just confirm by clicking
on “Next”:
Confirm by clicking on „Next“ if you do not want to change the name of the program dis-
played in the icon.
By clicking on „Next“ the automatic installation process will be started and finishes with the
following screen:
NOTE: Always install the driver before connecting the adaptor to the computer.
On the CD delivered with the PREMET® select the folder: “driver for USB Adaptor”,
then select the folder for your type of operating system and start the automatic
driver installation e.g. under MS Windows by double-clicking on the icon: “PL-2303
Driver Installer.exe”
Then the following screen appears:
- Reception and storage of measured data from the PREMET LS, PREMET XL
and PREMET XL(MS) with an IBM compatible PC or notebook, which is run-
ning under Windows 9x,NT,2000,XP
- Addition of extended engine data e.g. turbo charger speed, exhaust gas temp.
And others,
- Correction of wrong adjusted TDC sensor or errors caused by crank shaft de-
flection
After installation from the installation disk/CD ROM (see instruction for installation of PC
software for PREMET LS/XL/XL (MS)) the program WPREMET.EXE is located in directory
C:\PREMET by default.
To start the program click on the program Icon WPREMET.
Next click on the tab Units to select the engineering units used in this program:
After selection of the engineering units it is possible to adapt the scaling for the derivative
curve dp/da. (Background: On some engines there exists a very flat derivative curve with
low rates of pressure rise. With a higher scaling it is very difficult to detect the TDC posi-
tion for these engines.)
Select the scaling which best fits your engine. The scaling can be changed later anytime.
It is also possible to scale the drawing of the ACL acceleration sensor. Because the signal
amplitude of the ACL sensor depends on the mounting position and the engine measured
a great variation of maximum ACL sensor signal can occure. The selected scaling will be
valid for all cylinders of one measurement and also a selected reference measurement.
Select ACL sensor scale as max for maximum signal resolution. If the signal amplitude is
high reduce the ACL scaling to normal or min.
Finally select the serial communication port which is used to connect the PREMET de-
vices to the PC. If the PREMET is connected via a USB to serial converter use the virtual
serial communication port installed by the USB driver (see the manual: Additional informa-
tion for usage of USB interface for PREMET)
(Ports not available on this PC or in use of other programs are greyed and can’t be se-
lected)
All the SETUP information is stored in the WPREMET.INI file and always used at start-up
of the program.
Optionally the PREMET can be equipped with an additional sensor for injection pressure
measurement (option fuel) or for acceleration measurement (option ACL).
Within the Setup select the type of connected additional sensor:
After you have received and stored the data-file from the PREMET the program returns to
the main menu.
You can store additional data (for example exhaust gas temp, fuel rack pos. and others)
with the function ADD DATA. This function will be described in the chapter 4.

SETUP
FIRING ORDER
Then go back to
BASIC SETUP by
mouse-click.
To start the ADD DATA function please click on the ADD Data button.
To add additional
data please select
the cylinder pressure
data file you want to
add this data to.
Now you have to select the measured cylinder pressure data for analysing:
mouse-click on
Open
In every diagram you have the possibility to Print it out (on the installed Printer) and/or
to Copy it into the clipboard as a bitmap graphic for usage with other programs
The first diagram that will be shown is an Overlay of all cylinder pressure curves of the
selected data file.
With a mouse-click on the Functions button you get a list of different diagrams you
can choose from.
To get the information from other cylinders please use the (CYL + or CYL -) buttons.
If you use the (Cursor <- or Cursor ->) button the red coloured cursor moves over the
pressure curve, pcur shows the pressure value at the cursor position acur (related to the
TDC position). Clicking the Cursor button will show/hide the red cursor line.
If you have measured the cylinder pressure together with the injection pressure (PREMET
Fuel Plus devices only) the button Fuel will show/hide the injection pressure.
If you have measured the cylinder pressure together with the acceleration sensor
(PREMET MS/ACL devices only) the button ACL will show/hide the acceleration signal.
The Zoom button switches between the X axis ranges +/-180 degree crank angle around
TDC or +/-50 degree crank angle around TDC.
Clicking the button pscav corr allows changing the scavenging air pressure given before
the measurement.
Clicking the button Filter is OFF allows engaging a smoothing filter for the pressure curve.
Clicking on the then renamed button Filter is ON disengages the smoothing filter.
You can also get this diagram in a zoomed version by using the (Zoom) button
By using the (Zoom) button you will get the following diagram
To change the reference cylinder (blue) please use the (RefCYL- or RefCYL+) button.
In the same way by using the (Cyl- or Cyl+) button you can change the actual cylinder
(green).
This graph shows differences of the different cylinders. This is useful to detect deviations
in fuel injection timing as well as bad combustion or pressure losses.
Take care that the TDC correction has been done properly before
comparing different cylinders. Also take care that the different
measurements were taken at the same load.
This diagram gives an overview about the behaviour of all cylinders. We draw a line be-
tween all TDC of all cylinders and a line between all pmax positions of all cylinders. When
your engine is well balanced the line on top and at TDC position should be straight.
This function is only available if you have a PREMET Fuel Plus and the FUEL SENSOR
value in the SETUP was set to YES.
This diagram shows the injection pressure (violet) together with the combustion pressure
(green): The data table in the upper left corner shows the following data:
Fpnrp: Fuel pump non return pressure, pressure in the pipe between fuel pump
and injection valve before start of delivery
fpsta: Fuel pump start angle, crank angle at start of fuel delivery
fvoa: Fuel valve open angle, crank angle at start of injection, the accuracy of this
value depends on the actual fuel system, on some engines the computer
cannot exactly compute this value!
fvop: Fuel valve open pressure, the fuel injection pressure at start of injection
fmaxp: Fuel maximum pressure, maximum injection pressure
fdur: Fuel delivery duration,
Use the Cursor <- and Cursor -> buttons to move the cursor on the draw card.
This diagram is only available for PREMET XL data files!
We can also make an overlay p/V diagram of all cylinders by using the function (p/V all
cyl).
3. The following diagram shows a comparison of the mean pmax of each cyl-
inder.
4. Here the program shows the deviation of pmax mean of each cylinder
against the pmax mean of the engine
2. The deviation diagram of the mean indicated pressure of all cylinders com-
pared to the engine mean value
1. Bargraph diagram of the exhaust gas temperature Texh for each cylinder
2. The deviation of the single Texh from the mean Texh of the engine
If within the added data at the page ship name, load, others the value indicated power
MCR is given the software calculates the actual load by comparing the sum indicated
power to the setup value.
Clicking the button more shows the given additional data for this measurement:
The resulting pressure curve with wrong TDC position will look like this:
To correct these errors after the measurement has been done we provide the so called
function Shift TDC. Please select, if you want to do the correction manually or you want
the PC to assist you:
The diagram shows the pressure curves of 2 cylinders. Select as reference cylinder (blue)
the cylinder nearest to the fly wheel / TDC pick up (normally cyl. No. 1).
Now it is possible to shift the actual cylinder (green) manually by clicking the buttons
Shift Å or Shift Æ. The program calculates automatically the actual MIP and Pind.
Finally the compression curves of the both cylinders should be overlaid. Repeat this with
all cylinders. If you have selected as reference cylinder no. 1 clicking the Auto TDC cor-
rect button the program will do this with the actual cylinder for you.
This picture shows only one cylinder pressure curve. Select the desired cylinder by click-
ing the buttons RefCyl- or Refcyl+. Note the red marker line. Now move and rotate the
red marker line to be a tangent at the falling edge of the first derivative before ignition:
Note that the program has calculated the deviation from the real TDC as –3.2 degree
crank angle.
By clicking the button Auto TDC correct the program will first shift the curve in that direc-
tion and by the necessary amount that the deviation becomes a minimum. Finally it will
move also all the other cylinder pressure curves to have an overlaid compression curve.
Note that this function will fail, if cylinders have different scavenging air pressure!
Finally save the corrected cylinder pressure to a file (we recommend to add a character c
for corrected to the original raw data file name to divide it later).
Mark Setup printer first if you want to change the printer or printing orientation.
Mark Print only actual page if you want only the actual diagram to be printed.
Mark Print all pages if you want to have all different diagrams to be printed
(Attention! This will take a while and produces a lot of paper!)
Mark Print as hardcopy if you want the printout as a hardcopy. (This function can be
helpful, if you have trouble with your Windows printer driver software).
9. FILE FUNCTIONS
To ease file transfer and file management we have introduced a simple file manager into
the software:
At first you can change Source and the Destination drive and directory path
Copy Files : Herewith you can copy a file from the Source to the Destination
Move Files : Herewith you can move a file from the Source to the Destination
Rename Files : Here you have the possibility to rename a File in the Source
Delete Files : Here you have the possibility to delete a File in the Source
Create DIR : With this Function you can create a special Directory for your
PREMET files
Compress : With this Function you are able to compress one or more files to
store them on a disc or send these files by e-mail
We recommend using the compress function before transmitting data files by email in or-
der to protect them from unwanted changes during transmission. Also the file size will be
reduced significantly. The compressed file is a ZIP file compatible with known programs
like PKZIP, WINZIP or Windows Commander.
