CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the methodology that the researchers applied by the

researchers for the study. This includes the research design, respondents of the

study, data gathering instruments and data gathering procedure used in the study.

Research Design

In view of this, the researchers employed quantitative research using the

descriptive correlation method research in gathering information about presenting

the existing conditions. Descriptive research is a purposive process of gathering,

analyzing, classifying, and tabulating data regarding the preceding conditions

about such data with or without the aid of statistical tools. It also seeks to

determine relationships between variables explore cause of phenomena, test

hypothesis and develop generalization, principles of theories in the basis of finding

(Ardales,2008).

The researchers used this method because it will help them to gather more

reliable information and to come up with more precise conclusion which is useful

in completing the study. Descriptive method of research is the most applicable

type of research that can be used in conducting this research. It will also useful in

order for the researchers to obtain information concerning the current study with

respect to variables and conditions in the situation.

63

The researchers used convenience sampling, a specific type of non-

probability sampling method that relies on data collection from population

members who are conveniently available to participate in study. Each individual is

chosen entirely by chance and each member of the population has an equal chance

of being included in the sample. Every possible sample of a given size has the

same chance of selection (Saunders,M.,Lewis,P).

The researchers used convenience sampling to gather data who are

conveniently available to participate in the study. This sampling design is also

applicable to the study for the reason that the employees of TDRO have busy

working schedule.

Respondents of the Study

The researchers chose the Traffic Enforcers in Batangas City as the

respondents of their study who can provide appropriate information regarding the

study and can provide them a lot of help in pursuing the field of industrial and

organizational psychology.

The researchers had a total number of one hundred fifty (150) traffic

enforcers, ten (10) of them are the respondents for the pilot study to know the

reliability of the questionnaire and one hundred nine (109) of them are the total

respondents of the study. The data collected were analyzed using frequency,

percentage, weighted mean, independent t-test and one-way ANOVA.

Sampling Technique

Convenience sampling. Also known as availability sampling is a specific

type of non-probability sampling method that relies on data collection from

population members who are conveniently available to participate in study

(Saunders,M.,Lewis,P).

Convenience sampling is a type of sampling where the first available

primary data source will be used for the research without additional requirements.

In other words, this sampling method involves getting participants wherever you

can find them and typically wherever is convenient. In convenience sampling no

inclusion criteria identified prior to the selection of subjects. All subjects are

invited to participate.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers used survey questionnaire as their main instrument in

gathering information. Specially, a questionnaire is a tool or device for securing

answer to set of questions and adopted by the researchers from various sources

and which composes the information needed.

The researchers made instrument that was used in this study. It is composed

of two parts: Part I is a description of the respondent’s profile to ascertain that they

qualify as respondents. Part II were the questions regarding their work motivation

as a traffic enforcers.
65

In constructing the questionnaire, the researchers used different sources like

books and electronic sources and consult unpublished thesis in order to gain better

ideas to make their questionnaire valid. For the content, validation was done by

presenting it to the panelist, experts, statistician and the dean.

In order to assure that the questionnaire is reliable, the researchers

distribute it to 10 traffic enforcers as a respondents’ of Traffic Development and

Regulation Office Batangas City for a pilot survey. The researchers conducted

their dry run at TDRO. After getting the results, the researchers submitted it to

their statistician for reliability test. The reliability test resulted to a Cronbach alpha

of .974, which means that the questionnaire is reliable.

Likert scale is a 4 point scale that offers a range of answer options from one

extreme attitude to another, like “extremely likely” to “not at all likely”. Likert-

type questions will get you more granular feedback. Furthermore, sustainability of

the instrument is very important, thus, the present researchers constructed a

questionnaire that can be adapted and be used by the future researchers.

Data Gathering Procedure

The study was conducted to determine the work motivation of traffic

enforcers in Batangas City. The researchers started working this study second

semester of AY 2017 - 2018 and will end within the first semester of AY 2018-

2019.
66

The researchers made the actual survey last October 12, 2018 done through

the aid of researchers’ questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to the

employees of transportation development and regulatory office as the respondents

of the study. Specifically, the study was done to assess the work motivation of the

employees to stay in the company and be able to recommend a proposed

psychological activity for the mentioned company.

After preparing and finalizing the questionnaires, the researcher secured

permission from concerned office. The validation of the instrument was done by

presenting the questionnaire to the thesis adviser. Permission to distribute

questionnaire to the respondents was secured likewise as well as informing the

subjects about the study.

The researchers explained to the respondents that the results will be kept

confidentially and discuss the inform consent. The questionnaires distributed by

the researcher themselves. The researchers retrieved, tabulated, analyzed and

interpreted the results. The accomplished questionnaires collated and the tally of

responses per indicator done.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data that gathered from the survey was tallied, analyzed and

interpreted. The data collected was used to know the work motivation of the

respondents.
67

Statistical treatment of data is used to quantitatively measure the data that is

collected using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, independent t-test and one-

way ANOVA. Convenience sampling method was used in distributing the

questionnaires.

Percentage. It will be used to determine the demographic profile of the

respondents in terms of sex, age, educational attainment, civil status, size of

family, years in service, and employment status.

Weighted mean. It is used to determine what factors affect the work

motivation of traffic enforcers. Likert 1-4 was given to rate the items given with 1

as the lowest and 4 as the highest and their corresponding verbal description will

be used to describe the data.

In terms on the level of the employees’ work motivation, percentage was

used to determine the factors which is affected by the work motivation of the

respondents has.

Independent T-test. It is used to compare the means of two independent

groups in order to determine whether there is statistical evidence that the work

motivation of traffic enforcers are significantly different.

One-way ANOVA. Used to determine if there is significant difference on

work motivation when the respondents are grouped according to their profile
68

variables and on the level of the respondents’ work motivation in terms of the

following factors; jobsecurity, working environment.
