PREFACE

This report is the outcome of two weeks Survey Camp 2073 organized by Kantipur Engineering
College, Department of Civil Engineering for the students of 2071 batch as per the syllabus of
BCE. The camp was held within Bhaktapur district, Kharipati from the date 16Stmangsir to 26
mangsir 2073 B.S. The report reflects the methodology, observations and calculations made by
the students in the camp with the corresponding drawings.

Surveying is the science and art of determining the relative positions of above, on, or
beneath the surface of earth, and is the most important part of civil Engineering. The results of
surveys are used to map the earth, prepare navigational charts, establish property boundaries, develop
data of land used and natural resource information etc. Further survey maintains highways, railroads,
buildings, bridges, tunnels, canals, dams and many more. Thus, the objective of survey camp was to
master the course covered with elements of topographic surveying, road alignment and make us gain
the experience in this field performing topographic survey in a large area, learning to propose road
alignment and select suitable site for bridge axis.

The report is prepared with great efforts and dedications of the students who have devoted
themselves immensely from the very first day of field work till today. The students are always
learning and in need of betterment. Therefore, we feel this report deserves the excuses and tolerances
from the readers for any sort of errors or blunders present, despite the best efforts.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

This is a report of 10 days survey camp 2073 organized by Department of Civil Engineering- Survey
Instruction Committee 2073,Kantipur Engineering College which was held on Kharipati, Bhaktapur from
2073-08-16 to 2073-08-26.The main objectives of this camp were to enable each of us to work with full
confidence, accuracy and reasonably in the field and also to make us capable generating reasonable idea of
going through different types of difficulties in real field. Overall this camp has been proven to be an
effective medium to enhance our knowledge on survey methods on real field.
First of all we would like to thank the co-coordinator of this survey camp Er.Ima Nath Duwadi, for
providing us with the necessary enthusiasm and guidance throughout the camp period and also while
preparing this report. We would also like to extend our gratitude towards Er. Simpson Lamichhane,
Er.Birat Dhakal,Er.Sabin Paudyal, Er.Niraj Bohara, Er. Chandan Shah, Er.Bishnu Chapagain, Er.Suresh
Prasad Thakur for giving us instructions and guidance to work efficiently in the field.
We would like to heartily thank Mr. Niraulla Sir, and the lab Assistants Mr. Kumar Puri, Mr.
Shyam for their co-operation and friendly behaviour during the whole survey camp. We would also like to
express our appreciation to the administrators and staff of Nepal Electricity Authority Training Centre,
Kharipati, Bhaktapur for providing the peaceful, friendly environment along with lodging and fooding
facilities.
Lastly we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to our colleagues and seniors fo] their
genuine co-operation, expert guidance, encouragement and several prospective throughou the work.
May be, there is omission and error while preparing this report and hope respectiv< teacher, student
and. ail the reader may point out the mistake for improvenient of repoi preparing skill.

. ‘ .、

Surveying is the mathematical science used to determine and define the form, extent, and
position of features on or beneath the surface of the earth for control purposes—that is, for aligning land
and construction boundaries, and for providing checks of construction dimensions. Land boundaries are
set or measured for proper descriptions; the topography of landforms and natural or artificial objects are
depicted on maps; and major construction and civil engineering works such as dams ,bridges, railroads,
and highways are controlled by surveying methods. The measurements of a survey are linear or angular,
and principles of geometry and trigonometry are usually applied.
The main objectives of surveying courses allocated for civil engineering students is to promote
the basic knowledge of different surveying techniques relevant to civil engineering works in their
professional practice. After completion of two semester survey classes and practical with two week survey
camp, students are able to face any problems in real field with the best way to solve them. The B.E. third
year students of 2071 batch of about 86 students; were on 2-week survey camp dated from 2073-08-16 to
2073-08-26 in Nepal Electricity Authority Training Centre,Kharipati, and Bhaktapur. The survey camp
was taken as a part of 4-year Civil engineering course.
This is a detail report of the works, which were performed by our group, during the camp period.
It briefly explains the working procedures and technique used by this group during that camp period. In
addition, it also contain observations, calculations, methods of adjustment of error, main problem faced
during work and their solution, results of all calculations and their assessments with some comments is
presented in a concise form.

OBJECTIVES: . . .. ' ^■

The main objectives of the survey camp are as follows: • • • . • • • , . . . . . . • . . . .

• To become familiar with the surveying problems that, may arise during the field works.
• To became familiar with the parts of the instruments, their fonctions and handling the surveying
instruments for its use in surveying.
single person work.
• To complete the given project in scheduled time and thus know the value of time.
• To collect required data in the field in systematic ways.
• To compute and manipulate the observed data in the required accuracy and present it in
diagrammatic and tabular form in order to understand by other engineers and related personnel
easily.
• To tackle the mistake and incomplete data from the field while in office work.
• To know the complete method of report preparation.

ABSTRACT

The main objective of the Survey Camp organized by the civil department is to provide an
opportunity to consolidate and update the practical and theoretical knowledge in engineering
surveying in the actual field condition and habituate to work in different environment with different
people. In this survey camp we have to compute the traverse, leveling, bridge site survey, road
alignment with each belonging topographical map and proper cross section and profile of all technical
requirements. This survey camp helps us to build confident in our mind to tackle with any problem
encountered while doing surveying. The summary of the whole report is presented as follows:
