1: THROUGH EDUCATION OUR MOTHERLAND Those souls She sets aflame with love of right.

RECEIVES LIGHT It is a noble fully-rounded Education

That gives to life its surest consolation.
The vital breath of prudent Education
Instills a virtue of enchanting power; And as the mighty rock aloft may tower
She lifts the motherland to highest station Above the center of the stormy deep
And endless dazzling glories on her shower. In scorn of storm, or fierce Sou'wester's power,
And as the zephyr's gentle exhalation Or fury of the waves that raging seep,
Revives the matrix of the fragrant flower, Until, their first mad hatred spent, they cower,
So education multiplies her gifts of grace; And, tired at last, subside and fall asleep, --
With prudent hand imparts them to the human race. So he that takes wise Education by the hand,
Invincible shall guide the reigns of motherland.
For her a mortal-man will gladly part
With all he has; will give his calm repose; On sapphires shall his service be engraved,
For her are born all science and all art, A thousand honors to him by his land be granted:
That brows of men with laurel fair enclose. For in their bosoms will his noble sons have saved
As from the towering mountain's lofty heart Luxuriant flowers his virtue had transplanted:
The purest current of the streamlet flows, And by the love of goodness ever lived,
So education without stint or measure gives The lords and governors will see implanted
Security and peace to lands in which she lives. To endless days, the Christian Education,
Within their noble, faith-enrapture nation.
Where Education reigns on lofty seat
Youth blossoms forth with vigor and agility; And as in early morning we behold
He error subjugates with solid feet, The ruby sun pour forth resplendent rays;
And is exalted by conceptions of nobility. And lovely dawn her scarlet and her gold,
She breaks the neck of vice and its deceit; Her brilliant colors all about her sprays;
Black crime turns pale at Her hostility; So skillful noble Teaching doth unfold
The barbarous nations She knows how to tame, To living minds the joy of virtuous ways.
From savages creates heroic fame. She offers our dear motherland the light
That leads us to immortal glory's height.
And as the spring doth sustenance bestow
On all the plants, on bushes in the mead,
Its placid plenty goes to overflow
And endlessly with lavish love to feed 2: THE INTIMATE ALLIANCE BETWEEN RELIGION AND
The banks by which it wanders, gliding slow, GOOD EDUCATION
Supplying beauteous nature's every need;
So he who prudent Education doth procure
The towering heights of honor will secure. As the climbing ivy over lefty elm
Creeps tortuously, together the adornment
From out his lips the water, crystal pure, Of the verdant plain, embellishing
Of perfect virtue shall not cease to go. Each other and together growing,
With careful doctrines of his faith made sure, But should the kindly elm refuse its aid
The powers of evil he will overthrow, The ivy would impotent and friendless wither
Like foaming waves that never long endure, So is Education to Religion
But perish on the shore at every blow; By spiritual alliance bound
And from his good example other men shall learn Through Religion, Education gains reknown, and
Their upward steps toward the heavenly paths to turn. Woe to the impious mind that blindly spurning
The sapient teachings of religion, this
Within the breast of wretched humankind Unpolluted fountain-head forsakes.
She lights the living flame of goodness bright;
The hands of fiercest criminal doth bind; As the sprout, growing from the pompous vine,
And in those breasts will surely pour delight Proudly offers us its honeyed clusters
Which seek her mystic benefits to find, While the generous and loving garment
Feeds its roots; so the fresh’ning waters On fancy's gifted wings
Of celestial virtue give new life From Mount Olympus to the skies,
To Education true, shedding While Poetry more sweetly sings
On it warmth and light; because of them Than any sweetness nectar ever brings.
The vine smells sweet and gives delicious fruit
Ye rivals of the nightingale
Without Religion, Human Education Who carol some celestial lay
Is like unto a vessel struck by winds Beneath the night moon pale,
Which, sore beset, is of its helm deprived And by the tune you play
By the roaring blows and buffets of the dread Drive bitter mortal pain away.
Tempestuous Boreas, who fiercely wields
His power until he proudly send her down All ye who hold the power to free
Into the deep abysses of then angered sea. Those sorely grieved, by your charm'd word,
And fix in their fond memory,
As the heaven’s dew the meadow feeds and strengthen That by your genius is stirred,
So that blooming flowers all the earth The immortal thought that ye have heard.
Embrioder in the days of spring; so also
If Religion holy nourishes And ye who Phoebus' charms expose,
Education with its doctrine, she That stole divine Apollo's heart;
Shall walk in joy and generosity And borrowing from nature's clothes,
Toward the good, and everywhere bestrew With artist's magic art,
The fragrant and luxuriant fruits of virtue On linen canvas portray every part.

O hasten! See whose sacred flame

3: TO THE FILIPINO YOUTH Of genius will be laurel crowned;
And hear what moral name,
While trumpet peals resound,
Hold high your faultless brow, Around the whole wide world will be renowned!
Filipino youth, on this day grand!
Shine forth resplendent now, O blessed day and hour,
In gallant glory stand, Beloved Filipinas, for your land,
Handsome home of my motherland! Thanks to the mighty Power
Which, with loving hand,
Radiant Genius, arise! This venture and this consolation planned
Make thy noblest dreams his own;
Catch his mind in keen surprise;
Swifter than by tempest blown
Sweep him up to glory's throne!

Descend, O youth, -- the lovely light

Of art and science in your train; --
On life's arena, smite
And break the heavy chain
Where long your pinioned poetry hath lain.

Behold how, on this ardent zone

Where shadows dwell, the Spaniard's hand,
So wise and pious grown,
Confers a garland grand
Upon the youth of our fair Indian land!

O you, who now aspiring rise
