Municipal and Industrial Water Supply

Humans need clean and safe water. Water is used for everything. Though it is
not perishable, when used, it changes composition and is contaminated with different
substances that is not drinkable and usable by humans. Earth is composed mostly of
water but still humans finds difficulty in finding such clean and fresh water, this is
where municipal and industrial water supply comes in. It provides water in a
systematic way through installed pumps and pipe lines. Additionally its treatment
facilities, water storage facilities (reservoirs, water tanks and water towers) and
network of systematic pipelines makes people more productive in terms of
residential, industrial, and commercial or institutional establishments and more
secure in providing water for humans to live.
It was clearly discussed that sanitation to water is immensely necessary. The
process of the traditional water treatment is what had my full attention on. From the
separation of particles, separation of solids to destroying of bacteria, was very
interesting. I thought chlorination was the only method for disinfection of water but
there are more. But it was discussed that chlorine is the most preferred for it kills
bacteria and most viruses.

Irrigation

Agricultural is one sector that provides people for food. It was discussed that
agriculture needs and immense water supply than humans use for drinking alone.
Applying engineering methods for providing water to agricultural needs is the only
way to make this sector more productive and be much easier to manage. This
engineering way of controlling is called irrigating. Though through precipitation, water
could be distributed to agricultural fields, but eventually there would be a time that
short duration droughts will occur. Irrigating is the only key to control and constantly
manage the development of the agricultural sector. Not only irrigation provides
water, but it could be used for diluting salts in the soil and softening tillage pans and
clods. The sources of irrigation could be from the surface water or from the
groundwater.
Engineers clearly do have many responsibilities. Managing, searching and
developing such techniques in irrigation Is one way to help avoid possibilities of
famine.
