THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

INTRODUCTION

These days the most commonly utilized method of communication is social

media related devices are very important in human life. Media are basic elements for

academic development and individuals achievements. There are numerous online

networking platforms that include but are not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,

Pinterest, YouTube, Linkedin, Googlet, Flickr, Snapchat, Vine, Tumbler and others. The

main purpose of social media is to give access to its clients and users. They can have

conversation with other individuals and construct social relations on the web. They can

likewise share their contemplations and individual data on social media including

everyday happenings, suppositions, pictures, recording, and web links. Also, individuals

can promote their business and individual aptitudes. Social media networking has

changed numerous businesses; however the most striking impact of it is in the

classrooms and the overall education system. Whether it’s using private social

gatherings, Facebook pages, classroom twitter profiles or web journals, school after

school has grasped long range of interpersonal communication using some form of social

media. With such a high rate of students using social media networking in daily basis, to

there is a strong need to analyze the extent to which social media is having its impact on

students.

We know that media are used widely by many people. Formal and information

education to train people needs media as well. Media are basic elements for academic
development and individual achievements. Today, society is very different from what it

used to be 10-20 years age, and in order to keep pace with the changing world and the

nurture of students to meet the needs of tomorrow’s society, education reform is

inevitable. The new wave of education reform set new agendas in education. Apart from

the traditional emphasis on ethic, intellect, physical fitness, social skills and aesthetics,

schools in our world were expected to produce a new generation of students who could

learn on their own, think for themselves, and explore new arenas of learning. So media

and other new educational technology are growing in importance.

There is no doubt that online networking sites specifically the social media conveyed

individuals closer to one another more than ever. After the presentation of cellphones, the

utilization of online networking has risen exponentially. There has a well-known truth that

in order to utilize social networking websites, one needs to create an account and sign in

every time they want to access the websites. Every networking site does not give its

clients a choice to keep their online appearance in private. Due to this reason, individuals

face various privacy and accountability issues while utilizing online networking. This make

them deceived and once in a while prompts mistaken assumptions, moreover, it gives

those misguided feelings of being progressive. Another problem is the effect of social

media not only in social skills but also in generic health conditions of the society. The

reason behind this is people prefer to play games online that do not involve any physical

activity. The purpose for this is individuals want to play games online which do not involve

any physical action.

The face of social media today is quite different from what was considered to be

social media in the past. Users could create a profile and invite people as friends. This
way of communication is still now. It turned out to be common for individuals especially

teenagers to be engaged on social media websites. When individuals with a self-

presentational skill deficit develop a preference for online social interaction, they may

devote increasingly more resources to their online social lives; their careers and

relationships may quickly become secondary priorities.

These changes may have had an effect on the level of face to face interactions

among people. Social networking sites were used as a substitute for face to face

interaction, resulting in deteriorating relationship quality and decreased intimacy among

its users. But some are believes that this type of communication was not a substitute to

face to face interaction but rather it was an extension of communication with face to face

partners.

This study aims to identify the relationship between media usage and

students’ social skills, the main idea of social media networking, its importance and

utilization. The study will also focus on how the use of social media effects daily life of the

students and how its influences their academic and social prosperity. The primary source

of information for this research was Senior High School students from AMA Computer

College Batangas. The research has been conducted using survey questionnaires.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This section of study will discuss the supporting references of the research

problem. Social media advantages and disadvantages, sex, age and how it can affect the

social skills of each Senior High School students will be the researcher’s main topic of

discussion.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Bryer & Savattaro (2011) define social media as any technology which makes

social interaction, collaboration and deliberation of issues among stakeholders easier.

Social media also defined as technologies and applications that use the internet and

enable users to create and participate in various communities (Proceeding of AC, 2017).

However, social media research in High School Education is less extensive and

according to Charitonos and Blake (2013) the online environment facilitated better

interactions because of social media. Social media offers a significant opportunity for the

distribution of information and sharing ideas that are not available anywhere else and

creating new communities (Rooney, 2013).

According to Hoisten (2014) social media has impacted various facets of modern

life and it has profound influence n interpersonal communication. The present day is

characterized has by acute lack of time for individuals and families due to the need for

husband and wife be employed for meeting the needs of a satisfactory lifestyle. Time has

become the precious resource, and people are finding means of saving time because of

their fast paced lifestyle. people need interaction for fulfilling their social needs and social

media has become a preferred medium of communication with the proliferation of digital

and mobile technologies. Digitalization has reduced the face to face interaction of human

beings whether it is for marketing or promoting a product or a personal communication.

Hilde Hartman Hoisten (2018) says that the mobile phone has created a social

situation whereby people are getting used to avoidance of person to person

communication by switching over the mobile present day lifestyle and lacked of time have

made the usage of mobiles and other communication aids more useful for social contact.

Social media provide opportunities for users to engage in self-presentation of

identity and “talk” with family, friends, and colleagues (DeAndrea & Shaw, 2010). Unlike

the traditional social network research examining face to face relationships, the focus of
social media research remains on individual to individual communication rather than on

relationship or connections (Levine, 2013).

Further, online social interactions fundamentally differ from face to face

interactions on offline social network. Online social networking typically offers

opportunities for expression that are less restrictive. Users may disclose at levels quite

different than in their face to face conversations (Debatin et al., 2009). Also Facebook

users predominantly claim their identities implicity.

While online social networks differ from face to face social networks in important

ways, they nonetheless function as a viable channel for interaction (Memmi, 2014). In

describing Facebook specifically, Wasike and Cook (2013) noted that “Never before have

so many people gathered to communicate through a single medium”. Maintenance of

relationship online has become common. Diani (2013) concluded that while online

communities lack some of the fundamental requirements that connect face to face social

networks, they function effectively when backed by real linkages in face to face

communities.

According to Hilde Hartman (2018) social media can increase happiness and

nurture your special circle. But depending on the people, social media can potentially also

make impact to the users to make happy and more isolated. While most of initial research

in this field conclude with internet mostly having negative impacts on social life and well-

being. It can make it easier to all to keep track of existing acquaintance, and easier to

have access to information relevant o one’s social life. Social media can also have us

develop relationships with people that far away geographically (Fulvio Castellacci, 2013).
Hartman (2018) says that new technology can use location data to find others in

the area and facilitate real word social interaction, like what each individuals see with

mobile gaming platforms like Pokemon GO. This is used effectively, could be positive for

the development of social lives and expand social circle through the use of new

technology.

Social media is a rising trends in the world today. Communication skills are

exemplified by use of social media networking. Social media networking allows for a

communication outlet. Social media is being utilized by students, parents, business, and

religious organizations. It is being used in many forms by many different platforms for

many reasons. The transmission device is anything that carries a message, including

sound waves, light waves, pieces of paper, moble-phone signals and screens, the

internet, computer monitors. billboards, radio and television signals, and an endless

number of additional carriers (Baack,2013). Social media is employing many transmission

devices, including mobile devices and computers.

REVIEW OF RELATED STUDIES

According to Nicolas Dantuono, one of the most observable effect of social

media on society is social communication. Social skills and interaction are attributes

people need to succeed in life. it may be hard to see, but children build these skills as

they grow up interacting with other children in face to face interaction. Although social

media can negatively impact of adolescents social skills, it may actually be positively

impacting relationships among peers (Hussein Chahine). Teenage years are often tough
for many. Strong relationships among friends are how most adolescents cope with stress.

The use of social media and having the ability to remain connected with friends may

positively impact relationships among peers.

According to Valkenburge through the use and connectedness of social media,

adolescents are able to secure strong relationships with peers helping them cope with

stress. A large part of this generation social and emotional development accuring while

on the internet and cellphones. All the time the children and teenagers spent on the web

more specially social media sites, take time away from face to face communication and

person activities (Giedd).

Clarke-Pearson K says that the emerge of social media has created a new

avenue for facilitating daily information and communication needs. As a technology grows

and expand our range of communication social media is becoming a vital tool for daily

social interactions. According to Schurgin O’ Keeffe the benefits of using social media are

it can provide children with the opportunity to stay connected to friends, family, make

new friends, share pictures and exchange ideas. Children can also engage in their

communities by raising money for charities, develop their creativity through sharing their

art or music and get to know others from diverse backgrounds through shared interest

(Boyd). Social media sites also offer in enhances learning opportunities. Some schools

use blogs as teaching tools with the benefits of improving English skills, writing and

creativity. Facebook and other similar sites allows students to gather outside of school

and exchange ideas about assignments or collaborate on group projects (Borja).

According to Lenhart using social media can often become a risk for adolescent

even more than adults realize. Cyberbullying refers to using digital media to communicate
false, embarrassing information about another person and it is the most common risk for

all teens. Cyberbullying can happen to anyone and often causes psychological problems

such as depression, anxiety, isolationand even suicide (Hinduja & Patchin). 20% of teens

have sent or posted nude or semi-nude photos or videos of themselves online (National

Campaign to Treat and Prevent Unplanned Pregnancy). This phenomenon is known as

sexting many images or videos can get disturbed rapidly online and incur felony child

pornography charge as well as school suspensions and emotional distress for the victims

(Ienhar).

According to Reider Carson, Facebook depression is a new term that refers to

depression that develops as a result of childrenn and teens spending a lot of time on

social media sites and begin to experience depression as a result. When teens compare

themselves to photos of others and the illusion of others better live they can experience

decreased self-esteem and depression. Many children and adolescent do not understand

the fact that everything they do onlineleaves a digital fot print. This can hurt their future,

hurt their job or college application and follow them forever.

According to Knapp &Hall, when people engage in face to face communication,

social information is conveyed by vocal and visual use in the context of the situation. Non

verbal communication is an important part of communicating and its includes facial

expressions, eye contact, tune or voice as well as posture, between individual etc.

Moreover, children who understand opportunities for people interest with each other in

the they that is both helpful and essential to socially motivate people. This rapid fire quick

communication style that captivates millenials and other generations has shifted our

conversation from face to face instances to through the screen ones. Young people are
using social networks to engage in various content and express themselves not only for

socializing and leisure, but also for public issues or topic of interest.

Generation are learning how to connect network and share via share via social

media can facilitates face to face conversation with others; however, it can also serve as

a replacement for such interactions. Continously, research is building on a growing body

of knowledge digital culture and engagement to explore how our perception of social

media influences our engagement in daily social life.

Research Methodology

In this chapter the design, respondents, instruments, procedure and statistical

treatments to be used and done in the study will be discussed in the details.

Research Design

In a study, the approach is purely quantitative. The quantitative design

correspond to the test that is included in the study, and from the result of the survey

questionnaires containing the answers and respondents profile; age and gender. In

addition, this study used a descriptive normative survey method, this method of

collecting data involves structured questionnaires that given to a sample of a population

design to elicit specific information from respondents.

Descriptive research design describes the nature of a situation as it exist at a

time of the study and explores the course of a particular phenomena. This method used

to discover facts on which professional judgement could be based. It is a purposive

process of data gathering, analyzing, classifying and tabulating data about prevailing

conditions, practices, beliefs, process, trends, and cause and effect relationships. It is

used in many fields of investigation due to its applicability to solve different kinds of

problem.

Respondents

This study will conduct at AMA Computer College Bolbok Batangas. The

proponent selected those Grade 11 and 12 students to be the respondents of the study,

preferably those students aged from 16-18 years old. The possible total of students at

the said school are more or less 1,500 students, however only 100 students will be

used in the study.

Data Gathering Instruments

The researchers of this study will used survey questionnaire that consist of a

series of questions (or other type of prompts) for the purpose of gathering information

from respondents that will be a great help for those students who use social media and

have a struggle for their social skills. Survey questionnaire permits open-ended

exploration of topics, and cannot provide anonymity for the respondents. It is build trust

and support with respondents, thus making it possible to obtain more information.

Survey questionnaires are also sharply limited by the fact that respondents must be
able to read the questions and respond to them. Also researchers will be using a

respondent’s profile, indicating their name, age, gender, and sex.

Data Gathering Procedures

Firstly, the researchers of this study will find a credible source in the internet,

even magazines and books that have useful and important information about this study.

The researcher collects all the important information around the topic then they also

read it to make them familiarize to that information.

Secondly, the informations that the researchers gathered will be paraphrase and

combined to create a sentence to those questions that they want to know. And the

researchers will ask a permission to their research teacher to allow them to conduct an

survey questionnaire inside the school area.

Lastly, the result of the study will be recorded by the researcher so as to have

valid and reliable information. The data will be tallied, analyzed and interpreted

according to the specific problem set forth. After all the information and research have

been finalized, the researcher will give a copy to the school as a contribution for the

improvement of the school
