Safer Internet Day 2019
Yesterday was Safer Internet Day.
Although some classes did extra lessons
during the day, we do try to continually
drip messages in with the children as
part of our safeguarding duty
throughout all weeks. I would like to
make you aware of this website:
www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-
centre/parents-and-carers which has
some really good tips and advice. I
highly recommend that you spend 20
minutes having a look through the
advice they give and some of the guides
they have produced. They are written
without jargon and without getting too
technical, but they do provide some
really good advice. Key things to
consider are:
• balancing ‘locking down’ devices, in
terms of content and time
restrictions, with talking about
appropriate use (if you tell someone
not to do something, it is natural
curiosity to find out what they are
missing out on!).
• being aware of filtering systems you
may have on your WiFi at home as
well as on mobile devices (you may
be really well protected at home,
but what happens when you pass
your phone to your child – what can
they see – is your Facebook account
open, for example?).
• age-appropriateness of games and
apps – the children are very keen to
tell me they have been on Fortnite
(PEGI 12) and how many skins they
have for their characters.
• the time that children are on devices
when you think they are asleep – we
hear these stories too, often told
with a yawn!
I fully understand the difficulties of
managing device and Internet use – I
have children ranging from 3 to 13
years old – I have the same battles! This
week may be a good opportunity to
review your Internet safety and the
agreed rules you have in your home. A
couple of other great sites to explore:

information for parents – their Digital

they have an archive of all their past

PTA Film Night
Unfortunately, we have had to cancel
the Family Film and Pizza night due to
lack of interest. However, the PTA are
still keen to offer the children a film
night, so we will be hosting one for the
children on Thursday 14th March.
Letters/reply slips will be coming out in
the next week or so to sign up.
School Tracking System
A number of parents will have used the
tracking system that teachers also use
that monitors children’s progress each
term. You will have seen this
information at parents’ evenings
recently and may have used a login
yourself. Unfortunately, the company
(School Pupil Tracker Online – SPTO)
who provide this service to schools
across the country have announced
they are closing down the system at the
end of the year. As our subscription
comes to an end this month, ours will
end before half term.
I am working with other systems to
establish an alternative. In the
meantime, please be assured that the
teachers will continue to monitor your
children’s progress as they have been
doing for many years. Importantly, their
knowledge of your children informs
their next steps – where challenge and
support is needed.
At the next parents’ evenings, we will
still be able to tell you where the
children are working at and where we
would like them to be by the end of the
year.
I will open the parents’ evenings
booking system after the half term
holiday to give you plenty of time to
book an appointment. I know you will
be very proud of your children – in
particular with all the wonderful work
that is on display and in books.
