Efficient charging (for lithium-ion battery packs only)

The BC-M50 features a new charging system that allows quick,
efficient charging of two battery packs.

For details, see “Charging System” on page 24.

English
Compact and lightweight
The BC-M50 is compact, lightweight, and easy to carry.

Diagnostics functions
The BC-M50 checks connected battery packs for
abnormalities. An indicator will flash alternately in red and
green if a battery pack cannot be charged normally.

Refresh function (for nickel metal hydride battery

packs BP-M50/M100 only)
If a battery pack with remaining capacity is charged repeatedly,
the storage capacity of the battery may be reduced due to
memory effect (phenomena by which the remaining battery
capacity is memorized). To prevent against this memory
effect, a “refresh function” is provided to fully discharge a
battery pack before charging.

Charge progress indicator (for lithium-ion battery

packs only)
An indicator lights to show when a battery pack is charged less
than 80%, or 80% or greater.

Precautions

On the battery charger About memory effect

• Use the BC-M50 in an operating environment of 0˚C to 40˚C Nickel metal hydride battery packs suffer memory effect just
(32˚F to 104˚F). Since charging is difficult at low like the nickel cadmium battery packs. If this happens,
temperatures, we recommend that battery packs be charged discharge the battery pack completely or use the refresh
between 10˚C and 30˚C (50˚F and 86˚F). function (pages 28 and 33).
• Avoid using or storing the BC-M50 in dusty places or places
with corrosive gases.
• Avoid using or storing the BC-M50 in places exposed to
direct sunlight.
• Do not cover the ventilation holes.

On battery packs
• Even when fully charged, battery packs gradually lose their
charge naturally. Use the battery packs as soon as possible
after charging.
• Carry and store battery packs by installing them in your
equipment or by repacking them using the original packing
material.
• To prolong the life of battery packs, store them in a cool place
(about 20˚C (68˚F)), and charge in a place with an ambient
temperature between 10˚C and 30˚C (50˚F and 86˚F).
• When temperatures are 10˚C (50˚F) or lower, the
performance of a battery pack suffers and the usable time of a
battery pack becomes shorter. To get the longest usable time,
warm the battery packs to room temperature (about 20˚C
(68˚F)) before use.
• Carrying a spare battery pack is recommended.
• Charging of the nickel metal hydride battery pack will not
take place when the battery’s temperature is 0˚C (32˚F) or
lower or 40˚C (104˚F) or higher. If you start charging the
nickel metal hydride battery pack when the room
temperature or the temperature of the battery pack is
40˚C (104˚F) or higher, the charge indicator will light up
in green. Note, however, that the battery pack is not
charged at all under this condition.

Lithium-ion battery packs are free from memory effect.

There is no need to discharge them fully before recharging.

If the usable time of a battery pack becomes very short, it is

time to replace it with a new one.

SAFETY CHECK-OUT

After correcting the original service problem,

perform the following safety checks before
releasing the set to the customer :

Check the metal trim, “metallized” knobs,

screws, and all other exposed metal parts for AC
leakage. Check leakage as described below.

LEAKAGE TEST

The AC leakage from any exposed metal part to

earth ground and from all exposed metal parts to
any exposed metal part having a return to
chassis, must not exceed 0.5 mA. Leakage
current can be measured by any one of three
methods.

1. A commercial leakage tester, such as the

Simpson 229 or RCA WT-540A. Follow the
manufacturers’ instructions to use these
instruments.
2. A battery-operated AC milliammeter. The
Data Precision 245 digital multimeter is
suitable for this job.
3. Measuring the voltage drop across a resistor
by means of a VOM or battery-operated AC
voltmeter. The “limit” indication is 0.75 V, so
analog meters must have an accurate low-
voltage scale. The Simpson 250 and Sanwa
SH-63Trd are examples of a passive VOM
that is suitable. Nearly all battery operated
digital multimeters that have a 2 V AC range
are suitable. (See Fig. A)
