Kiesau, Friedrich awards honor players

Clinton’s rich football
tradition includes a play-
er, Randy Kiesau, and a
coach, Fred Friedrich,
who have been remem-
bered through awards
given every year at the
CHS football banquet.
Kiesau and 13 other
players were killed in an
Oct. 2, 1970, plane crash
carrying members of the
Wichita State football
team. He was 20 years old.
The Kiesau Award is
given annually to the
player who contributes
the most to the team both
with his play and leader-
ship. Kiesau’s No. 22 was
retired and the Kiesau
Award was created in 1970
to honor seniors who ex-
emplify those qualities.
Fred Friedrich was a
Clinton principal, teacher
and assistant football
coach who passed away
on Dec. 3, 1994, just after
Clinton played in a state
title game.
The Friedrich Leader-
ship Award was created
shortly afterward and is
voted on by the coaches
and given to the player
who best exemplified
qualities of leadership
that Friedrich displayed.
Lance Smith was the
first recipient of the
Fred Friedrich Leader-
ship Award in 1994.
Bob Lorenz won the first
Randy Kiesau Memorial
Award 24 years earlier.
Now-graduated quarter-
back Conor Wyer won the
Friedrich Award in the
2017 season. Despite being
a pocket passer his first
year under center, Wyer
was a team player and
adapted his style to the
offense, leading the team
in rushing yards (696) and
touchdowns (nine). He
was a natural leader in
the huddle, giving Clinton
an even keel presence in a
trying season.
Senior offensive lineman
Rowdy Hartness won the
Kiesau award. He was the
tough-as-nails road paver
for the offense. Hartness
played well enough to sign
with Oklahoma Panhan-
dle State after the season.
