THE CIDER ROUTE
To the East of Caen, the Cider
Route is a signed tourist route
which weaves its way through
countryside typical of the area,
linking the villages of Beuvron
en Auge (classified village),
Bonnebosq and Beaufour Druval
via picturesque little roads. The
rounded landscape, with its cha-
teaux, manors, half-timbered
houses and apple orchards,
makes up the picture postcard

guided tour of the cellars and

cambremer’
Cider
Pure apple juice is pressed from a mixture
of apple varieties, all with descriptive,
sing-song names: for example, ‘peaceful’,
‘estate’, ‘fieldmouse red’, ‘potbelly’ and so
on. The exact proportions used in blending
are kept secret by each cider-maker. The
resulting pure apple juice is the first stage
in the process, but as cider is a living thing

Cider-makers compete annually and those selected display the sign ‘Cru de Cambremer’ on
the roadside at the entrance to their farm. You are welcome to visit the farms to find out
how cider and calvados are made.
N.B.:
Some farms (n° 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14) are located a little way off the Cider Road on either
side of the circuit. Do not hesitate to ask for directions.
The newly recognised ‘CIDRE DE CAMBREMER - A.O.C. PAYS D’AUGE’ label is your guaran-
tee of provenance and quality. As vintages differ from cellar to cellar, ask to taste the cider.
In addition, certain producers marked with a ▲ will take you on a visit of their premises
(cellar, cider making plant, cider press or distillery). Closed at lunchtime, from noon to

 What to see?
ON THE ROUTE
Beuvron en Auge
● One of the ‘Hundred Loveliest Villages in
France’. In the late 18th, early 19th C, tan-
ning and weaving expanded and the streets
named Enfer and Catouillette take their
names from that period. In the square, the
market hall, twice destroyed, was rebuilt in
1975 using authentic salvaged materials.
Around the square you can see the 16th C
manor, the 17th and 18th C half-timbered
houses, the 18th C Auberge de la Boule d'Or
and the 17th and 18th C presbytery.
● The panorama of the chapel of Clermont:
the 16th C church surrounded by beech trees
dominates the Dives valley and is located on
the edge of a plateau. Recently restored, it
has now regained its earlier 16th C looks.

Cambremer
● The church: the oldest parts date from the
12th C but the majority of it is from the 17th
C, and the nave contains nine 20th C stained-
glass windows most of them gifts from grate-
ful families.
● The Pays d’Auge Gardens and half-timbered
houses: a collection of planted scenes with
various decorative touches (sensory garden,
angel garden with its healing plants, water
garden…) 30 hectare nursery of perennial
plants including specimen plants, old roses…

Crèvecœur en Auge
● Chateau: Crèvecoeur is one of the rarest
examples, amongst Normandy’s fortified sites
dating from the Middle Ages, of a miracu-
lously preserved small stately home. Medieval
site retaining original plan and buildings
(12th C walls and chapel; 15th C half-timbe-
red buildings). Today it houses three displays
about medieval history, Normandy’s traditio-
nal architecture and the inventions of the
Schlumberger brothers. Visits from the end of
March to the end of October. Daily in April,
May, June, July, August and September;
Sunday afternoons only in October.

Traditions
THE TRADITIONS ROUTE
Near to Caen, this tourist route high-
lights the traditions of the Pré-Bocage.
The locals have used their resources to
the full extent in agriculture, industry
and craftsmanship as can be seen
through the abundance of livestock
and mixed farming, the iron mines at
Jurques and Mont Pinçon, the forge at
Danvou, and the lime kilns at Mont en
Bessin and Landes sur Ajon. Local raw
materials are also used to their best
effect such as shale from Longvilliers,
slate from Caumont and wood from
the hills above Ondefontaine.
Here, farmers and craftsmen embrace
traditional skills and know how with
contemporary techniques and have
10 grouped together to welcome visitors

and demonstrate their unique quali-
ties. Visits to their workshops or
farms, explanations of the way they
work and the sale of produce are pos-
sible whatever the product - honey,
pigeons, traditional bread, snails,
cider, pommeau or calvados.
Dotted with old villages and a tradi-
tional landscape, this route highlights
the popular and religious traditions
with churches, chapels and remains of
monastic life (the abbeys at Aunay sur
Odon and Plessis Grimoult). Families
can enjoy themselves along signpos-
ted walkways, around the lake at
Cahagnes, at the Jurques Zoo or in the
Souterroscope Slate Mine at Caumont
l’Eventé.

THE GORGES OF THE VIRE ROUTE
To the south west of the county, the
Bocage Virois (the Vire hedgerows
area) has two rivers, the Vire and the
Souleuvre, flowing through it and
offers a very varied landscape: gra-
nite plateaux and valleys of schist
rock create a succession of wooded
hills, rocky escarpments, meadows
and enclosed valleys… Walking in all
its forms is the major activity in the
area, with a wide choice of narrow
ways and signed footpaths which
criss-cross the countryside. By follo-

explore this very unusual landscape,
with its rural and religious heritage
including such sites as the church at
Malloué or the one at Ste Marie
Outre l’Eau as well as the Souleuvre
viaduct with its activity centre

bosun’s chair… In the short time it
has been open the centre has
become a ‘must’ for people who
enjoy exciting sports!

ON THE ROUTE

Malloué
● 18th C church: set on a rocky outcrop
from where you can look out over the Vire
valley, the church no longer has a transept
and its walls are riddled with unusual
holes. Its interior furniture is decorated
with designs inspired by local agricultural
themes and wild flowers and it also has
some painted stone statues dating from the
15th C. Church illuminated as part of the
‘Circuits Nocturnes du Bocage Virois’. Open
daily 9am to 7pm.

Ste Marie Outre l'Eau
● 15th/18th C church: alabaster frescoes.
● The cross at the cemetery was probably
erected to protect the village from the
plague which decimated the Bocage Virois
in the 17th C.

to Notre Dame de Lourdes.

La Ferrière-Harang
● Remains of the Souleuvre viaduct: built from
plans by Eiffel, this railway bridge over the river
linked Vire with Caen. Only the metal track was
destroyed, leaving the supports intact.
Suspended footbridge which serves as launch
platform for bungy jumping and the giant zip
wire. Plus an adventure trail (11/2 hour) which
completes the range of activities on offer. Open
daily from end June to mid-September and
weekends from mid-March to end November.

displays stones set in a fishbone pattern. Bell

● St Quentin chapel (pilgrimage): statue of St
Quentin, in painted wood. The Saint can be

● 18th C church: reredos in Louis XV style and

ends and bank holidays throughout May, from
10am to noon and from 2pm to 6pm. Open

THE SUISSE NORMANDE ROUTE
To the South of Caen, along the
banks of the Orne river, the Suisse
Normande owes its name to its tra-
demark topography. The route wea-
ves its way through this mini-
Switzerland. You can follow a signed
itinerary by car, passing through
villages such as Thury Harcourt,
Condé sur Noireau, Pont d’Ouilly
and Clécy. Almost with a mind of
its own, the circuit sometimes plun-
ges through gorges and rocky
escarpments, sometimes follows the
bubbling waters of the Orne River.
At St Omer the ‘Route des Crêtes’
begins, offering magnificent panora-
mic views over the mountainous

Moulins
THE MILL ROUTE
To the north of Caen the Mill Route
follows the valleys of the Seulles,
Mue and Thue rivers and stretches
as far as the Creully canton between
Caen and Courseulles sur Mer. The
itinerary travels through the green
countryside of the Bessin close to
the Landing Beaches and the
Mother of Pearl Coast. The three
rivers, which have formed green
pools in the white, chalky rock, used
to feed numerous flour mills and
woollen mills. They remain of inte-
rest, even if they are no longer

working, and whilst they are some-
times not visible from the road you
can easily get off the beaten track to
explore the landscape and local
habitat. Along the length of this
route, you will find sites worth
visiting - massive farms, religious
buildings, chateaux and manors
such as Creully, Fontaine Henry,
Thaon, Brécy and picturesque villa-
ges such as Reviers and Amblie
which bear witness to the rich archi-
tectural heritage of the area.

Amblie
● Village with narrow streets, do the ‘tour de
l’île’ on foot.
● 12th/13th/19th C church: 18th C portal with
unusual decorations on the west face.
● 18th C water mill: only a few remaining ele-
ments display the old activity of this mill, nota-
bly visible marks of the giant wheel on the wall
which were rebuilt in the middle of the 19th C.
Creullet
● Private chateau dating from 18th C: during
the Second World War the chateau was the
headquarters of General Montgomery who
arrived here on 8th June 1944. A commemora-
tive plaque recalls the visit of General de Gaulle
on 14th June.

Creully
● Feudal chateau constructed over 400 years,
between the 12th and 16th C, with many vesti-
ges remaining including a 12th/13th C enclo-
sure from the Middle Ages, two impressive 13th
C vaulted rooms, a square keep dating from the
14th C and a tall 15th C octagonal tower. There
is also a Renaissance turret and 12th C stables.
During the Second World War the BBC set up its
equipment in the keep during June and July
1944 in order to broadcast information about
the D-day landings. Open from 1st July to 15th
September, from 10:30am to 12:30 and 2:30pm
to 5:30pm (except when in use for receptions).

● 12th C church retains original simple car-
vings. Inside is the tomb of Antoine de Sillans
(died 1641) who was lord of Creully. Open year
round from 10 am to 6 pm.
Fontaine Henry
● Renaissance residence which has been passed
down through the same family over the centuries.
The rooms on the ground floor display collections
of period furniture and antique paintings. The
family chapel dates from the 13th and 16th C. The
chateau is particularly noteworthy for its high
roofs and its elaborately carved façade. Open from
Easter to June 15th and from September 16th to
November 2nd, weekends and bank holidays from
2.30 pm to 6.30 pm. From June 16th to September
15th open daily from 2:30pm to 6:30pm, closed
Tuesdays. From 15th July to 31st August. Evening
visit every Friday from 10.30pm to midnight. TEL

which became a leper hospital despite its central
location in the village.

Henry in the direction of Thaon.
Reviers
● Village which has attracted a strong craft tra-
dition under the umbrella of the Arts Festival.
● Old houses, remains of 13th C chapel of Ste
Christine, church with a 13th C tower.
● Canadian military cemetery (just off the Mill
Route, visit the British cemeteries at Bazenville
and Secqueville en Bessin).
Rucqueville
● Church partly dating from 11th C: unique
example of a historical collection of chapters
dating from 11th/12th C.
St Gabriel Brécy
● The gardens of Chateau de Brécy: terraced gar-
dens, enclosed by stone balustrades and statues,
tall impressively decorated entrance door. Chateau
and gardens are listed ancient monuments (17th
C). Open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sunday from Easter
to All Saints holiday, 2:30pm to 6:30pm. Also open

● St Gabriel’s Priory: 13th and 17th C buildings,
has operated as a horticultural centre since 1929.
Founded in 1058, the priory was once very pros-
perous which explains the quality of the remai-
ning buildings: gate house, priory manor house,
ruins of the judicial tower and, in particular, the
remains of the Romanesque priory church, redu-
ced to just the chancel. Seasonal exhibitions.
Open visit of the gardens every weekend and
during the local school holidays from 9am to
5pm. Guided tours in summer according to the
exhibition. Opening times obtained locally or at

Thaon
● 11th C romanesque church: screened by gree-
nery at the bottom of a valley. Exterior visits
possible. Open on Sundays from 3pm to
6:30pm throughout July and August.

OFF THE ROUTE

Bény sur Mer

● Canadian Military Cemetery. The British
cemeteries of Bazenville and Secqueville en
Bessin can also be seen close to the Route des
Moulins.
Colombiers sur Seulles
● Tumulus: A megalith situated close to the
village of Colombiers sur Seulles from the neo-
lithic period app 4000-4200 BC. This is the
oldest man made monument in the Calvados.

ted on the Seulles river, close to the chateau.
Dating from the 15th C the mill retained its two
wheels up to the start of the 20th C, still milling
flour. Nowadays you can only see one of them.
● On the road to Arromanches you can see a
windmill in the park of l’Ile de Plaisance, right
in the middle of the oyster beds. Visit these for
tastings on a daily basis from 9am to 12:30pm
and from 2:30pm to 7pm.
