I. RATIONALE:

Barangay Paddaoan, Conner, Apayao has a total population of 1582 with a

total number of household of 291 and a land area of 935.66 hectares or 9.35 sq.km.

The population density is 169.20 people per square kilometre (2010 Socio –

Economic survey of the Municipal Planning and Development Council Office – LGU

Conner). As of 2010, barangay Paddaoan reflected a total population of 982 within

the labor age bracket. Out of this number 622 are economically active while 360 are

not economically active. Of the economically active population 79 or 12.70% are

employed while 543 or 87.30% are unemployed. Most of the buildings used as

dwelling are constructed out of mix construction materials. These composed of 127

dwelling units which are made mostly of galvanized iron, concrete and wood

combination. 73 dwelling units are constructed out of light materials which are mostly

bamboo and other light construction materials. Likewise, 47 dwelling units are made

out of pure wood materials. Further, majority of these community dwellings are

constructed under the supervision of a well – experienced and skilled laborers or

foreman. However their vast experiences in the field of construction are not

adequate. Majority of the carpenters are high school level or even lower, thus their

knowledge in comprehension especially in computing, estimating and interpreting

minimum structural specifications is insufficient enough to meet the demands

required by the standards of construction sector.

Through these findings, the CED believed that there is an imperative need to

conduct trainings and workshops intended for carpenters, laborers, and foreman to

advance their skills in the field of construction estimations. Moreover, the trainings

and workshops aim to elevate knowledge of the local carpenters in response with the
emergence of new construction materials and procedures and the methods on how to

estimate. This training and workshop will educate them of the prevailing basic

structural codes and laws, both local and national, which are essentials in estimating

technical drawings and eventually a safe and sound structure.

Due to the success of the past two extension activities spearheaded by

the CED at barangay Ripang and Malama Conner, Apayao, the CED, in response to

the aim of the college to extend its helping hand to the community, will continue its

extension endeavour at barangay Paddaoan Conner, Apayao.

II. OBJECTIVE:

This extension activity aims to reinforce and formalize the knowledge of local

carpenters of Barangay Paddaoan with regards to construction estimations,

specifically:

1. Illustrate the different plane and solid figures as basis for computing areas

and volumes;

2. Demonstrate proper proportioning of concrete mixture;

3. Discuss the standard procedures and sizes in cutting, bending, and splicing of

reinforcing steel bars as per NSCP specifications;

4. Demonstrate techniques and methods in estimating the roofing works and

formworks;

5. Discuss proper reading of structural plans and on the proper laying out

specifications incorporated in it; and

6. Evaluate prior knowledge of the local carpenters of barangay Paddaoan as

regards to construction estimate.
