Foreword
The descriptions and service procedures contained in this manual are based on de-
signs and methods studies carried out up to March 2003.

The products are under continuous development. Vehicles and components produced
after the above date may therefore have different specifications and repair methods.
When this is believed to have a significant bearing on this manual, supplementary ser-
vice bulletins will be issued to cover the changes.

The new edition of this manual will update the changes.

In service procedures where the title incorporates an operation number, this is a refer-
ence to an V.S.T. (Volvo Standard Times).

Service procedures which do not include an operation number in the title are for gen-
eral information and no reference is made to an V.S.T.

The following levels of observations, cautions and warnings are used in this Service
Documentation:

Note: Indicates a procedure, practice, or condition that must be followed in order to

have the vehicle or component function in the manner intended.

Caution: Indicates an unsafe practice where damage to the product could occur.

Warning: Indicates an unsafe practice where personal injury or severe damage to the
product could occur.

Danger: Indicates an unsafe practice where serious personal injury or death could oc-
cur.

Bodybuilder Module
The Bodybuilder Module (Bodybuilder Module) is an
extension of the vehicle control unit (VECU) and is in-
tended for superstructures, for example cement mixers,
refuse trucks and mobile cranes. The bodybuilder mod-
ule is secured in a unit together with the vehicle control
unit and is positioned under the dashboard.

MID 249 PID 29 Extra Throttle Control, Percentage Position

General Information
Applies only to vehicles with an extra throttle control, e.g.
dual control or hand throttle for optional equipment on
the vehicle.

Note: This fault will occur if the second throttle/remote

throttle is enabled in the Bodybuilder Module function.
However, no second throttle/remote throttle is physically
connected to the Bodybuilder Module.

Note: Values shown are for part number 3175131, Ac-

celerator Pedal Assembly.

Component: Varies with the design of the extra throttle

control. (See superstructure instructions)

Cable harness: Varies with the design of the extra throt-

tle control. (See superstructure instructions)

General Information
Applies only to vehicles with an extra throttle control, e.g.
dual control or hand throttle for optional equipment on
the vehicle. This idle switch is directly connected to the
extra throttle control.
Note: Values shown are for part number 3175131, Ac-

Component: Varies with the design of the extra throttle

control. (See superstructure instructions)

Cable harness: Varies with the design of the extra throt-

tle control. (See superstructure instructions)

Fault Code
FMI 7
Incorrect response from the mechanical system.
Conditions for fault code:

• If the signal from the idle switch is not available in

the interval 0–13%, the control unit interprets this as
a fault and a fault code is stored.

• If the extra throttle control is being used in a station-

ary application only (no idle validation switch
present in the throttle control). Ensure that the
Bodybuilder Module is informed of this by turning on
parameter ZX (handthrottle active). Otherwise, this
fault code will result.

• For non-stationary second throttle applications, a

throttle control with an integral idle validation switch
(IVS) must be used. The recommended control is
the Volvo PIN: 3175131.
Possible cause:

• Break in supply cable.

• Open-circuit in the signal cable.

• Signal cable short-circuited to ground.

• Signal cable short-circuited to supply.

• Faulty contact.

• Contact resistance and oxidation.

Reaction from the control unit:

• The control unit disconnects the function.

FMI 2
Intermittent or incorrect data.
Conditions for fault code:

fault and a fault code is stored.

Possible cause:

• Break in the cable between the Bodybuilder Module

control unit and other control units.

• Short-circuit to ground in the cable between the

Bodybuilder Module control unit and other control
units.

• Short-circuit to voltage in the cable between the

Bodybuilder Module control unit and other control
units.

• Faulty Bodybuilder Module control unit.

Reaction from the control unit:

• Warning light requested.

Noticeable external symptoms:

• Warning light lights up.

• Reduced functionality.

Appropriate check:

• See service information group 371, ”Fault tracing,

Data links”.

MID 249 SID 253 Calibration Memory EEPROM

General Information
This fault code describes internal faults in the control unit

Component: Bodybuilder control unit (9100)

Fault Code

FMI 2
Intermittent or incorrect data.

Conditions for fault code:

• If the internal checksum is not correct, this is inter-

preted as a fault and a fault code is stored.

Possible cause:

• Incorrectly programmed control unit

Reaction from the control unit:

• Warning light requested.

Noticeable external symptoms:

• Warning light lights up.

Appropriate check:

• Reprogram the Bodybuilder Module control unit.

MID 249 PSID 200 J1939 Data Link Interruption, Engine ECU
General Information
The control units share important information via the
SAE J1939 data link. If a control unit is missing informa-
tion from another control unit, this fault code is used to
indicate the control unit that is expected to transmit infor-
mation via the SAE J1939 data link.

Fault Code

FMI 9
Abnormal update rate.

Conditions for fault code:

• If the Bodybuilder module does not receive the mes-

sage from the engine control unit via the SAE J1939
data link, the Bodybuilder module interprets this as
a fault and a fault code is stored.

Possible cause:

• Break in the SAE J1939 data link between the

Bodybuilder module and the engine control unit.

Reaction from the control unit:

• Fault code is stored.

Appropriate check:

• Fault trace the SAE J1939 data link, see separate

service information group 371 ” Data links, fault-
tracing”.

MID 249 PSID 201 J1939 Data Link Interruption, Vehicle ECU
General Information
The control units share important information via the
SAE J1939 data link. If a control unit is missing informa-
tion from another control unit, this fault code is used to
indicate the control unit that is expected to transmit infor-
mation via the SAE J1939 data link.

Fault Code

FMI 9
Abnormal update rate.

Conditions for fault code:

• If the Bodybuilder module does not receive the mes-

sage from the vehicle control unit via the SAE
J1939 data link, the Bodybuilder module interprets
this as a fault and a fault code is stored.

Possible cause:

• Break in the SAE J1939 data link between the

Bodybuilder module and the vehicle control unit.

Reaction from the control unit:

• Fault code is stored.

Appropriate check:

• Fault trace the SAE J1939 data link, see separate

service information group 371 ” Data links, fault-
tracing”.

MID 249 PSID 202 J1939 Data Link Interruption, Instrument Cluster
General Information
The control units share important information via the
SAE J1939 data link. If a control unit is missing informa-
tion from another control unit, this fault code is used to
indicate the control unit that is expected to transmit infor-
mation via the SAE J1939 data link.

Fault Code

FMI 9
Abnormal update rate.

Conditions for fault code:

• If the Bodybuilder module does not receive the mes-

sage from the instrument cluster via the SAE J1939
data link, the Bodybuilder module interprets this as
a fault and a fault code is stored.

Possible cause:

• Open-circuit in the SAE J1939 data link between the

Bodybuilder module and the instrument.

Reaction from the control unit:

• Fault code is stored.

Appropriate check:

• Fault trace the SAE J1939 data link, see separate

service information group 371 ” Data links, fault-
tracing”.

mission ECU
General Information
The control units share important information via the
SAE J1939 data link. If a control unit is missing informa-
tion from another control unit, this fault code is used to
indicate the control unit that is expected to transmit infor-
mation via the SAE J1939 data link.

Fault Code

FMI 9
Abnormal update rate.

Conditions for fault code:

• If the Bodybuilder module does not receive the mes-

sage from the transmission control unit via the SAE
J1939 data link, the Bodybuilder module interprets
this as a fault and a fault code is stored.

Possible cause:

• Open-circuit in the SAE J1939 data link between the

Bodybuilder module and the instrument.
Reaction from the control unit:

• Fault code is stored.
