stems,

Objectives: SWBAT… audience, behavior, condition, degree.

• Accurately describe the four types of Form in their own words.
• Replicate a bud vase design following teacher demonstration correctly using 3 out of the 4
components/plants.
• Identify flowers/plants and their Form type using pictures from lecture. Correctly identify 7 out of
10.

Vocabulary: Form, line, filler, form, mass (Form/form have two different meanings)

Cycle 1:
Lecture Discussion
Now that we are all thinking about flowers. Lets discuss
what we are gonna learn today.

Today we will…
Learn the four types of Form and what they mean.
Identify flowers commonly used in floral design and
their form.
Create a bud vase design
Lets take out a sheet of paper to take notes. Questions/Activities:

In biology class we all learned that life is classified by

Taxonomy like phylum, order, class, species and so
Why might we use Genus in floral design and not
on. The level of classification we are most concerned species?
with in floral design is called genus.

Another classification used in floral design is actually

an Element of design we learned called Form.
There are four types of Forms:
line, mass, filler, form… Large sticky notes/white board:Line Form Mass
Filler
What do each of these mean? Have students go around the room and write
what they think each of these mean. OR ask
Go around the room with your marker and write what around the room how each student defines these
you think each form means. forms and write them on the board. Then when
everyone has finished we will go over their
answers.
Line-linear
Mass-round and substantial
Filler-small and busy to fill space
Form-unique shapes

Lets all Draw a Table like this one in our journals.

This table will help keep us organized today.
Now lets learn about some common flowers and
plants used in floral design and what their
classifications are.

Up first, from our riddles we have Snapdragon.

Genus- Antirrhinum
Form-Line
Fun fact-The snout
The name of this flower’s genus in greek translates
to snout because the tip of the flower looks like a
nose.

Now lets look at Tulips

Genus-Tulipa
Form-Mass
Fun Fact-Tulip Mania
One bulb sold for the same price it would cost to feed,
clothe and house a family for half a lifetime.
Only lasted 2 to 3 years. Collapsed from unfulfilled tulip mania-1636-37
promises for a flower. Paper IOU’s were lost.
Roses
Genus-Rosa
Form-Mass
Belinda’s Dream
Developed by a Mathematics professor at Texas
A&M. This rose was introduced in 1992 and was the
first rose designated Earth-Kind (registered
trademark) by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service.

Okay, lets read one more riddle.

This is a yellow flower,Which can grow to ten feet tall
It gives you seeds you can eat, And is turned into oil.
(Sunflower)

Sunflower
Helianthus
Mass
30’ 1” How tall do we think the worlds tallest sunflower
The tallest sunflower on record grew in Germany and ever grew?
measured 30 feet and one inch tall.

Daisy
Gerbera
Mass
Blues
Gerbera Daisies come in many natural different colors.
However they do not naturally come in the color blue.
If you ever find a Blue Gerbera Daisy it was made
artificially.

Carnation
Dianthus
Mass
Three main types
Large flower, spray carns/ pixie carns, dwarf flowered.

Leatherleaf
Rumohra
Mass
Florida
Most leatherleaf used in the US is grown in Florida.
There was one year when a hurricane hit all of Florida so
hard that no leather leaf was available to use in floral
designs for months.
Galax
Galax
Mass
Rosette
Galax looks very pretty as individual leaves. However it
also looks really cool as a rosette! Floral artists
discovered that multiple galax leaves can be wired
together to make a rosette.

Myrtle
Myrtus
Line
Weddings
In the language of flowers, Myrtle means and
symbolizes love. It also has a very sweet fragrance. Due
to these things it is often used in wedding bouquets.

Wax flower
Chamelaucium
Filler
Alternatives
Many people like baby’s breath in their floral designs
however Baby’s breath has a distinctive odor. Wax flower
is an wonderful alternative to baby’s breath since they
have a sweet lemon sent and come in multiple colors
including a graceful white.

Okay, here is another riddle:

I get filled with water, But I’m not a shower
It’s in me you would put, A beautiful flower. (Vase) Discussion activity for students while I take a
minute to set up my materials for the bud vase
A vase! Which is what we are going to need today. We are design.
going to be making a Bud vase design.
Lets all Draw another Table, this time with an extra Before we move on, take a minute and discuss
column to list quantity. with a partner your favorite flower we learned
about and why. Include the genus and form of
Cycle 2: your favorite.
Demonstration/relevant practice
We are going to create a floral arrangement. Since this Or
is our first time making one together this will only be a
participation grade for our practice round of floral Have students draw in their notes a picture for
arranging. their favorite flower we discussed in class and
label in their drawing how the flower or plant fits
We will start with the vase, and make sure its clean.
its form.
We are not going to fill these with water right now.
Since this is our first time and we have to carry them
we don’t want to spill. Please water them when you get
home. They can go a little while without water.

This arrangement is simple, beautiful and fun. There are

four main steps in creating a bud vase design.
Step 1: Lets start with the carnations. To space them
apart one will need to cut lower than the other.
This creates an implied line between the mass flowers.
We also need to remove all leaves below the top of the
vase. Leaves in the vase, especially in the water will
rot much faster.

Step 2: Next we will use our pieces of myrtle. We

don’t need a whole bush in our vase just one or two
pieces will do. Again remove any leaves that would be
below the top of the vase. If not enough leaves are
removed we can take it out and remove some more.

Step 3: Next we’ll use the wax flowers. Where do you

think these should be used?
There is empty space on either side of the carnations.
Filler flowers and plants are used to fill those empty
spaces. Again we don’t need a whole lot of them just
enough to make it a fuller design.
I will guide the students through creating the bud
Step 4: Lastly we will use these Galax leaves. Why do vase design discussing the types of form and
we use these? What will these do in this design? any issues as they come up and/ or as students
When we add then to the side of the design they add finish.
and extra element of balance. They make the design
not just a straw looking shape. How are these forms being expressed in this
design? What are they doing in the design?
Now it is your turn! If we are struggling with flower placement, think
of the form and what purpose this flower has
Closing: 5 Minutes there.
Wrap it up!
What did we learn about the 4 types of form?
How do we feel about describing these forms in a
design?
This is a?
This flowers form is?
A common form for flowers is?
Are all green plants we use fillers?
An example is?
Todays design is a?
It’s form is?
Don’t forget when we take our arrangements home
to water them. We don’t want to fill the vase to the
top, we want half to 3/4th full of water. If you turn
your vase around, in the back of the design is the
easiest spot to put water in the vases.
Okay lets read one last riddle before we go.

This is a green plant you see

Towards the end of the year
And when you stand under it
You might kiss somebody dear.
(Mistletoe)
