ENGR 3311: ENGINEERING DYNAMICS!

SPRING 2016

NAME:
Exam 01: Chapters 12–15
Instructions
• Solve each of the following problems to the best of your ability. You have two hours in which to complete this exam.
• You may use your calculator and your textbook.
• Read and follow the directions carefully. Pay attention to the hints!! They are there for a reason!!
• Solve using the method required by the problem statement. If you are not explicitly required to use a specific technique,
please be sure to show sufficient work so that your method is obvious.
• Show all your work. Work as neatly as you can. If you need scratch paper, blank sheets will be provided for you.
• It is permissible to use your calculator to solve a system of equations directly. If you do, state this explicitly. If you
need to use a solver to evaluate a trig equation, you will be allowed to either use your mobile device briefly, or you may
borrow mine. You may only use the device to solve the specific equation; you may not look up formulae or solutions to
any other problems.
• Express your answer as directed by the problem statement, using three significant digits. Include the appropriate units.

Problem 01 Chapter 12: 12.188

When θ = 2π/3 rad, the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the
circular plate are dθ/dt = 1.5 rad/s, and d2θ/dt2 = 3 rad /s2, respectively.
Determine the magnitudes of the velocity and acceleration of the rod AB at
this instant.
Hint: Start taking time derivatives: dr/dt, d2r/dt2. Notice how the motion of
rod AB is constrained!
Because the rod is constrained by the slot at B, its velocity and acceleration
will be the radial components vr and ar (no vθ or aθ).

Problem 02 Chapter 13: R1-33

Packages having a mass of 2.5 kg ride on the surface of the conveyor belt. If the belt starts from
rest and accelerates to a speed v = 0.75 m/s at t = 2 s, determine the maximum tilt angle θ so that
none of the packages slip on the inclined surface AB of the belt. The coefficient of static friction
between the belt and each package is µs = 0.3. At what angle 𝜙 do the packages first begin to slip C
off the surface of the belt once the belt is moving at a constant speed of 0.75 m/s?
Hint: Use kinematics to find the acceleration up the ramp. Draw the free body equation for
package on incline as it accelerates up the ramp; solve for θ. Draw free body equation for
package at point C, at the instant just before it begins to slip; solve for 𝜙. Assume that the belt
curvature is circular (so what kind of acceleration will the package have at C?).

Problem 03 Chapter 14: R1-48

The block has a mass m = 0.5 kg and moves within the smooth vertical slot. The block is
attached to a spring (k = 100N/m) which is unstretched at position A. The block is released
from rest at A. Use the work-energy theorem to determine the constant vertical force F which
must be applied to the cord so that the block has velocity vB = 2.5 m/s when it reaches point B at
sB = 0.15 m above point A. Neglect the mass of the cord and pulley.
Hint: There are three forces doing work on the block. Pay attention to whether each force will
do (+) or (–) work on the block.

Problem 04 Chapter 15: R1-27

Two smooth billiard balls A and B have equal masses m = 200 g. If A strikes B with a
velocity of v1 = 2 m/s as shown, determine the final velocity of each ball just after the
collision. Ball B is initially at rest and the coefficient of restitution e = 0.75.
Conserve momentum, use coefficient of restitution along line of impact = x-axis:

No impulse along y-axis, no momentum changes:
