ABSTRACT

Roby, Rizqi Alfa. 2018. The Analysis of EFL Teacher’s and Learners’ Talk in the
EFL Classroom Interaction at SMAN 2 Kediri. Thesis. Department of
English Language Education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training.
State Islamic Institute of Kediri (IAIN Kediri). Advisors: (I) Burhanudin
Syaifulloh, M.Ed., (II) Dr. Toyyibah, SS., M.Pd.

Keywords: Teacher’s Talk, Learners’ talk, Classroom Interaction

Interaction is one of important points in teaching learning process

especially in the classroom. The aspects of interaction involve the teacher’s talk
and the learners’ talk. Therefore, the researcher is interested in finding out the
interactions between teacher and students for getting real evidence about teacher’s
talk and learners’ talk. This research was aimed at discovering teachers’ talk and
learners’ talk categories occurred in an EFL classroom interaction and showing
whose is the most dominant between teacher’s talk and learners’ talk.
This research used descriptive qualitative design. The data were obtained
through observation conducted in the second grade of an EFL classroom at Senior
High School 2 Kediri. The observation was conducted in two meetings along with
audio recording. This research also used teacher and student interview to support
the data from observation and recording. The data were then analyzed by using a
framework proposed by Flanders (1970) namely Flanders Interaction Analysis
Categories (FIAC) focusing on categories of teacher’s talk and learners’ talk.
The finding of this research, showed that all categories of teacher’s talk
were found in the classroom interaction namely accepts feeling (1%), praise and
encouragement (5%), accept or uses ideas of students (10%), asking questions
(31%), lecture (10%), giving direction (40%), and criticizing or justifying
authority (3%). Moreover, the result also showed that all learners’ talk categories
were found in the classroom interaction namely learner-response (64%) and
learner-initiation (36%). In this study, the more dominant is teacher’s talk (67%)
from the total of utterances found. Thus, the analysis of teacher’s talk and
learners’ talk in the EFL classroom interaction would be beneficial for teachers in
teaching English especially in classroom interaction.
