Professional Development & Action Plan


5 - Year Action Plan

Objectives:
● Secure a mid-level professional position
● Seek out and apply for Doctoral programs
● Enhance professional network through conferences and professional affiliations
● Submit conference proposals
● Give back and stay involved with SDA program

Year 1: 2018 - 2019 1. Seek out and secure a mid-level professional position.
a. Preferences
i. Seattle-Tacoma Area
ii. Community College or Smaller institution
(preferably mission-based if not a CC)
iii. Assistant Director or Director level work
2. Expand professional network through engaging in NASPA
and local student affair related opportunities

ACPA/NASPA Competencies: Assessment, Evaluation & Research


● Find ways in current or new position to gain more experience in conducting assessment
and/or research
● Evaluate how I am doing assessment and evaluation in my current position
● Seek development opportunities and talk to assessment leads for division to improve
skills in AER
ACPA/NASPA Competencies: Law, Policy, and Governance
● Find more ways to become involved with understanding governance at institution
● Find ways to gain student conduct experience and learn skills around mediating
● Stay current with local legislature, civics, and news that impact the student population I
work with

Year 2: 2019 - 2020 1. Begin researching doctoral programs


a. Study for GRE if needed
b. Conduct information interviews with programs and
professionals
c. Connect with faculty of programs
2. Consider other professional affiliations to join and seek out
professional development opportunities
a. Conference proposals
b. Trainings
c. Volunteering for a conference
d. SDA

● Think about how I can become more involved with a higher level of management

● Ask for more responsibilities to lead department where appropriate

● Seek out opportunity to lead a hiring committee

● Stay current with local legislature, civics, and news that impact the student population I
work with
● Seek out opportunities to observe policy development and committee work that allows
me to grow my skills in supporting the development of student centered policies

Year 3: 2020 - 2021 1. Apply for Doctoral programs


2. Continue to get more involved in current position and
looking for growth opportunities
3. Seek out growth in position (more responsibilities)
a. Chair a committee
b. Be a part of a college wide committee

● Seek out information and stay up to date with trend in higher education around the
above topics
● Seek out conferences like NCORE, SJLI, and People’s Institute to improve EDI skills,
knowledge, and awareness

● Continue to build out network especially in API community
● Think about non-negotiables and needs in next career/education transition
● Seek out mentors to practice negotiation skills

Year 4: 2021 - 2022 1. Doctoral Student at program of choice

2. Create new Action Plan and Timeline
3. First Full year in a Doctoral Program
