This is an elementary school library that houses a variety of materials including 1600 accelerated
reader books that are available for reference and checkout. Students in kindergarten through fifth
grade may check out two books per week. Kindergarten through second grade must select the
everybody fiction section and after Christmas break second grade can check out chapter books.
Third through fifth grade students are permitted to choose two books from any section in the
library along with CD’s and magazines. Teachers have no checkout limit on items they can
borrow as it supports and enhances their lessons. Circulation period is for one week but may be
renewed as needed. For special projects students may check out more than the two-book limit
when needed. Overdue notices are sent home regularly and any student not returning their items
will be banned from obtaining additional materials until it is returned or paid for. Students are
not charged any late fees but must pay for any lost or damaged books.
The school district sets its yearly budget for the library based upon the percentage of book
collection per the Dewey classification system. This school district did not publicly disclose the
amount allocated to Piner Elementary regarding its yearly library budgeted amount. The only
budget breakdown that was available was seen in the school’s collection development policy.
The guide for Piner is as follows: Fiction-30%; Non-fiction- 30%; periodicals-10%; software-
8%; audiovisual- 6%; general supplies- 6%; films, videos- 5%; fixed assets-5%. The school
librarian has the right to request modifications or additions to the budget when the need arises.
This will ensure that the collection will meet the ongoing needs of the students, staff, and
community.
Size of collection; number & type of staff:
The collection development policy did not state how big the size of the collection was. It did
state that it contained over 1,600 accelerated readers, magazines, and audiovisual materials. The
staff contains one principal, one guidance counselor, one librarian, one school psychologist, one
Title One teacher, twenty-two teachers along with clerical and other specialists. The teachers are
fully certified with three or more years of experience and there is a 17:1 student to teacher ratio.
The school population is approximately 351 students presently. The librarian has fifteen years of
Piner Elementary School, in the Kenton County School District, is a public school that serves
pre-K through fifth grade in Morning View, Kentucky. It is the largest elementary school in the
district and is undergoing growth yearly. The school population is mainly rural and serves a wide
range of student abilities and backgrounds. The library has partnered with the Kenton County
Public Library and the children’s librarian from there attends the school once a week to help in
different capacities such as read aloud or assisting the librarian. Morning View’s current
population is 2,920 with 81 people living per square mile. The community has grown from a one
room school house to three elementary schools. The breakdown of the community is 99.1%
Caucasian with 46.7 being the median age. The community is largely involved in tobacco
production and is located off the Licking River in the northwest region of the state.
Library’s Mission
The mission of Piner Elementary library is to instill information, literacy skills in students to
enable them to become lifelong learners. This will be achieved by creating a learning community
designed to intertwine the three components of a distinguished media center: program
administration, teaching and learning, and information access and delivery. The media center
needs to be the hub of the school community by integrating the school’s curriculum and
providing interest, information, and enlightenment for all. It should always be an open, inviting
atmosphere that inspires students, teachers, and the community a love for reading and lifelong

Piner Elementary School mission states that the entire school and community will work together
to ensure all students obtain a strong academic foundation, success in life, and character. The
school fosters Productive attitudes, Rigorous teaching and learning opportunities, Independent-
that has 769 family households out of 1,096. It is more family-centric then the surrounding
counties with 31% being married with children, 5.9% single with children and 7.3% divorced
with children. The median household income is $51,889 which is lower than the surrounding
counties. Highschool graduates in the previous year were 86.6% and 15% entering a four-year
college. The school maintains that many of the parents are active members of their PTA
program.
