A Good Marriage
Allie Driver and I got married 45 years
ago today, February 21, 1953. We met
in Algebra class in high school. She was
the first girl I ever dated. I took her to
a high school dance. We dated for three
years before we got married, so we
have been friends for 48 years. We are
in love, of course. But we are also best
friends. We complement one another,
each filling in weaknesses in the other.
Few things so demonstrate the genius of
God as does a good marriage. “And the
LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall
upon Adam, and he slept: and he took
one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh
instead thereof; And the rib, which the

LORD God had taken from man, made
he a woman, and brought her unto the
man. And Adam said, This is now bone
of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she
shall be called Woman, because she
was taken out of Man. Therefore shall
a man leave his father and his mother,
and shall cleave unto his wife: and they
shall be one flesh. And they were both
naked, the man and his wife, and were
not ashamed” (Genesis 2:21-25).
What this last sentence tells you is that
God granted to these two a truly inti-
mate relationship. And such a relation-
ship is only possible with two. But it is
more than intimate.
Read in Ecclesiastes 4:7-12. “Then I re-
turned, and I saw vanity under the sun:
There is one alone, without compan-
ion: He has Two are better than one,
Because they have a good reward for
their labor. For if they fall, one will lift
up his companion. But woe to him who
is alone when he falls, For he has no one
to help him up. Again, if two lie down
together, they will keep warm; But how
can one be warm alone? Though one
may be overpowered by another, two
can withstand him.”
I think the time this really came home
to me was when Allie had major sur-
gery in 1977. She had a growth on
her thyroid and had half the thyroid
removed. To see Allie so helpless and
hurting touched me as few things ever
have. I wanted more than anything
else to ease her pain, to make her com-

summon aid if she needed it. I stayed
with her until she was strong enough to Ecclesiastes 4:7-12

both had our sickness and ailments,
and it is hard to imagine having to Ecclesiastes 7:25-29
struggle with those things alone.
I feel sorry for Solomon because, while Proverbs 5:14-23
he described what I have, he never ex-
perienced it. For he did not have one Proverbs 31:10-31
woman with whom he was intimate
and whom he loved above all others.
He had one thousand women–700

 Doing Good by Ronald L. Dart
There are some ideas in the Bible that
are so simple and so obvious that it
is staggering that human beings have
to ask for an explanation but we do at
times. I want to give you a classic ex-
ample of this. It is found in Matthew
5:43-44: “You have heard that it was
said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.’ “But I say to you,
love your enemies, bless them who
curse you, do good to them who hate
you, and pray for them who spitefully
use you and persecute you.” Now of all
the teachings of Jesus, I can’t think of
any that is more neglected than this
little short passage—‘Do Good’.
No End to It
Let’s look at Psalm 37:3: “Trust in the
LORD, and do good; so shall you dwell
in the land, and verily you shall be
fed.” Isn’t this simple—trust God and
‘do good’. But what does He mean by
this? I want to tell you something. One
of the reasons we slide over this com-
mandment and don’t think a lot about
it is because it’s scary. Do you know
what’s scary about this command-
ment? There is no end to it. When He
tells me to rest on the seventh day I
can do that. I know when the Sabbath

Day begins and I know when it ends,
and trust me, I know how to rest. I can
sleep late, I can get up and do nothing,
and I can lie around on the couch. I
am good at resting.
However, to ‘do good’; there is no end
to that. After the Sabbath is over I can
go back to work, however, when I have
done good, there is simply more good
to be done. It never ends. It goes on.
So what are good works? Here are
some hard-core simple, straightfor-
ward, down to earth examples of do-
ing good. “When the Son of man shall
come in his glory, and all the holy an-
gels with him, then shall he sit upon
the throne of his glory: And before
him shall be gathered all nations: and
he shall separate them one from an-
other, as a shepherd divideth his sheep
from the goats: And he shall set the
sheep on his right hand, but the goats
on the left. Then shall the King say
unto them on his right hand, Come,
ye blessed of my Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world: For I was an
hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was
thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a
stranger, and ye took me in: Naked,
and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ked, and clothed thee? Or when saw
ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye we thee sick, or in prison, and came

Ron Dart had some advice from 45 years To Married Couples

1. Abstain from sex before marriage. Ev-
erything changes after sex. Sex with no
commitment will wreck your life. There
are a lot of things that can happen as a re-
sult of pre-marital sex, and most of them
are bad.
2. Take your time about getting married.
We dated for three years. It is not so much
how old you are, but how well you know
one another.
3. Have a real wedding with family and
friends around.
4. Commit before God to stick it out and
not divorce. This means you have to be
especially careful going in.
5. Women, stay away from angry, violent
men. Break off with them on the first an-
gry outburst without ever looking back.
A man like that can get you killed (and
perhaps your children as well).
6. I know you love this person, but do you
like him or her? If not, break it off.
7. If you are not sure about getting mar-
ried, don’t. Neither of us had the least
doubt when we married. If you have
doubts, it is never too late to break it off
before marriage.
1. Cultivate the art of negotiation. Ask,
“What would it take to make you happy?”
It is the most dangerous question you can
ask, but it cuts past all the bull and gets to
the root of the problem.
2. Don’t make very many promises, and
make none that you can’t or don’t keep.
3. Tell the truth, never lie. Truth is the basis
of trust and without trust, you have noth-
ing. It may be painful, but the total pain in
your life will be far less.
4. There may be a time to say nothing but
not if saying nothing constitutes a lie.
5. Learn the value of being together in
silence. Some people feel they are not to-
gether unless they are talking. People who
have been together a long time learn to
read one another without words–unless
they are never quiet.
6. Do not expect your partner to read your
mind. If you want something, say so. There
is a great danger in a marriage that you
will wind up doing things neither want to
do because neither says, “I don’t want to.”
You may miss doing thing s you both will
love because neither will say, “let’s do it.”
7. Never allow your partner to forget an
anniversary. If you do, it is your own fault.
We start talking about our anniversary
weeks in advance.

The stakes are high.
Opportunity
Now I want to tell you what this para-
ble says to me. It says to me that this is
not a question of who I like and who I
don’t like. It’s a question of opportuni-
ty. If you walk along a road and find a
man in a ditch, this man is your neigh-
bor. It doesn’t make a difference if you
ever saw him before in your life. We
can’t go out and save the whole world,
but we should be able to make a differ-
ence from time to time.
In Galatians 6:10 Paul writes to the
Galatians and says “Therefore as we
have opportunity, let us do good unto
all men, especially to them who are
of the household of faith.” Oh I get it
now. I have a special obligation to all
of the people who are brethren of the
household of faith. But in saying so, I
admit that I have an obligation to ev-
erybody. It is my brothers and sisters
in the faith that I have a special obli-
gation to which does not relieve me of
my obligation to the rest. This is what
Jesus said. This is what Paul says.
I know that you and I can’t save the
world. There is too much pain, too
much poverty, too much sickness, but
if each one of us could save one per-
son, we would have done something
of cosmic significance.
Now I started this message by saying
it’s so simple to ‘do good’. To ‘do good’
is one of the most obvious things a
person could ever read in the Bible
and should be able to say, “Okay I
understand it.” The opportunities to
‘do good’ are all around us, and once
you start, you can’t give up. That’s the
challenge that comes to you today,
