THIS ONLY WORKS WITH A DESKTOP COMPUTER

Ok, here is a trick I learned the other day while installing Windows XP with a SATA hard drive and CD/DV
IDE CD drive install it. Run the windows set up and it will work fine. No need to install 3rd party raid driv
windows xp successfully. Run the drivers cd that came with the new motherboard. Then shutdown your c
cd/dvd drive back in and it will work perfect. I have done this several times and each time has worked.

RECAP:
1. Take out SATA CD drive and Install IDE CD drive.
2. Run Windows XP from the IDE drive and install it on the SATA hard drive.
3. Once inside windows run the drivers & utilities cd that came with the new motherboard. And install all
4. Shutdown the computer and install the new SATA cd/dvd drive back into the system.
5. You're done!

The problem is that, although I have integrated the RAID and SATA drivers into the image, and then bur

If I connect my RAID array with vista installed, the drive appears fine. I then disconnect these and leave

Before you begin the installation I would like to share some optimising / cost saving tricks before you tho

1) Use re-writable cd/dvd disk for buring your SATA embedded XP package.
This will save your money if you did not find correct SATA drivers for your HDD as you can re-erase and

2) Use nLite application to burn ISO image.

Other apps may not work!

3) Before downloading / hunting for your suitable SATA drivers on internet ,

look if you have Intel Matrix Storage Storage console installed on your Vista machine already. If it there
FilesIntelIntel Matrix Storage Manager.... or something like that.
In this directory you can find one folder called 'Drivers'.
These are the nothing SATA drivers. Normally one OEM(OMV?) file, two CAT files, two INF files, one unid

Pick that all to manipulate your XP package using nLite.

It worked great for me!!

The thing is that, SATA drivers ;I think has nothing to do with OS specification. They are meant for way
optimisation.

I even found that Sound Card drivers (RealTek) are the same one for XP and Vista , might be only true i
But it is worth to give a try as it may reduce your further headache of hunting all new drivers for XP.

Mark,
"XP should install fine on SATA drives provided you dont enable AHCI or RAID in the Bios.
A much easier method & less complicated. "

ur genius, just disable AHCI or RAID in BIOS and XP recognizes the SATA drive.
In my case, i just disable AHCI. GENIUS!!

Thanks Mark

An easier workaround for people still fighting with this problem in 2010:

download the Gparted ISO file (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/) and burn the ISO image on a CD.

Boot the PC with the GParted CD, launch GParted, create your partitions as primary partitions, set the fil

After this, just reboot the PC with the Windows XP set up CD and install XP on the desired partition...the

Comment #413 by: Moe on 01 Apr 2010, 14:21 GMT

HI all,

Great article by Dragos! This one took me a while to find an answer to, research and get right. Thanks to
contributed also.

I think I can make this a bit easier for most XP SATA installs!

I have a Gateway FX P-78 laptop that came with Vista64 and SATA HD. I installed a 1TB SATA external 7
3 drives. One I made an XP install. I set up a dual boot between Vista64 and XP32.

Heres how I did it without slipstreaming drivers.

1) Download the drivers for XP for your disk controller and save them on a thumb drive or another partit
want to install.

2) Check the BIOS Boot drive list and make sure your drive is listed and NOT excluded from the boot ord

3) In the BIOS set the controller from AHCI mode to IDE mode.

3) Install XP normally

4) Install XP sevice pack 2 or 3 from a saved location ( I started with an SP1 version of XP and installed

5) I also downloaded unzipped and installed the proper intel chipset driver update "Intel_45_Express_Ch

6) Open the Device manager and select the disk controller and open the drivers tab. It will show up as a
you booted the system.

7) Select Update Driver.

8) Select "Not at this time" for connection to WinUpdate

9) On the next dialogue select "Install from a list or specific location (Advancced)"

10)Select "Include this location in search" and then browse to the folder where you have save your DECO
files.

11) Select the correct disk controller from the list.

12) WIndows will respond and tell you that the driver does NOT match the device and recommend again
anyway!

13) Reboot and hit F2 to get into the BIOS setup again.

14) Change the disk controller mode back to AHCI.

15) You should boot normally into XP now!

16) If you need to restore the MBR on your Vista partition you can either use:
a) the freeware utility "EasyBCD"
b) On my last working attempt, I simply placed my Vista partion in the boot exclude list in the bios boot
changed it back after XP was installed to 2nd in the boot order after the optical drive. Worked fine and th
or XP available on the next boot.
c) Acronis True Image Backup has an option if youve backed up your Vista drive (AS YOU SHOULD!) to r
CD. The procedure allows you to select retrieve only the boot sector and MBR from a backup.

Good Luck!

Moe
