3
42.8 INTEGRATION OF AQUATHERM PIPE WITH OTHER SYSTEMS
5 A. General
6 1. When integrating Aquatherm piping systems with other systems or
7 components not made of PP-R (e.g. components not made of PP-R like
8 valves, pumps, other piping, check valves, strainers, etc.), take care to ensure
9 the operating parameters for PP-R will not damage other materials in the
10 system or vice versa.
11
12 2. Verify all parts of the system as compatible with the medium being carried
13 before installation. Aquatherm pipe does not require treatment to protect it
14 from corrosion. Metals (ferrous and non-ferrous) in the system may be
15 susceptible to corrosion. Provide water treatment to protect system metals.
16
17 3. Do not mix Aquatherm pipe with other piping systems in conditions that
18 will cause the other system or components to fail.
19
20 4. The issues described here are only of concern in DHWR-systems. For
21 domestic cold water (DCW) and mechanical (heating-cooling)-systems no
22 additional requirements or actions are necessary.
23
24 B. Domestic Hot Water Recirculation Systems (DHWR)
25 1. When there is copper piping used in conjunction with PP-R in a DHWR
26 system, take care to ensure the operating conditions will not cause
27 degradation or erosion/corrosion of the copper.
28
29 2. Follow the Copper Development Association guidelines (CDA Publication
30 A4015-14/16: The Copper Tube handbook – www.copper.org) for sizing,
31 temperature and flow velocity in the copper tubing.
32
33 3. Sustained high levels of copper in DHWR piping can damage components
34 within the system, even PP-R.
35
36 4. Damage caused by copper in the water resulting from erosion/corrosion or
37 other degradation of copper components in the DHWR system will void the
38 Aquatherm warranty.
39
40 5. It is considered good design and operational practice to ensure that the
41 maximum HW-temperature within any part of the system / loop does not
42 exceed 60°C (140°F). Some regulations and codes further restrict the
43 temperature at any fixture to a maximum of 50°C (120°F). Do not exceed the
44 temperature rating of the pipe for the operating pressure.
45
1 6. Importantly, the maximum temperature used must not exceed the rating of
2 the pipe for the operating pressure. (See Aquatherm green pipe catalogue –
3 table: permissible working pressure potable/drinking water – Fluid
4 transported: water acc. to DIN 2000)
5
6 7. Flow rates in a DHWR system should not exceed 0.5 m/s (1.5 ft./sec)
7 anywhere in the system, except in some special cases where velocities up to
8 1 m/s (3 ft./sec) are needed to achieve proper flow temperature. The CDA
9 Publication A4015-14/16 - The Copper Tube handbook - limits the velocity
10 in DHWR system to similar rates.
11
12 8. When re-piping an existing DHWR-system originally installed in copper
13 tubing, ensure all possible copper is replaced. If some copper remains as part
14 of the system, strictly follow the rules and guidelines of the Copper
15 Development Association (CDA Publication A4015-14/16: The Copper Tube
16 Handbook) regarding flow rates and water conditions.
17
18 9. Small amounts of copper or brass in valves and other equipment will
19 generally not cause an issue. If the copper fails, it may degrade O-rings,
20 gaskets, PP-R and other components as well, shortening their service life.
21
22 10. When adding PP-R to an existing copper system in a DHWR-application, the
23 level of copper in the water shall be tested. These levels shall not exceed 0.1
24 mg/L (ppm). Higher levels of total copper indicate that the copper pipe is
25 corroding /eroding due to system and/or water conditions. See section
26 2.08.B.4 above. Do not install PP-R in the system under these conditions.
27
28 C. DHWR system shall be Hydraulically balanced.
29 1. Hydraulic-balancing-valves shall be installed in every circulating loop
30 throughout the complete system to ensure the required flow rate is
31 maintained for each area of the building, and ensure that proper flow velocity
32 of the smaller return piping is maintained at or below the manufacturer’s or
33 CDA’s recommendations.
34
35 2. Pipes shall be sized to avoid water hammer and excessive surge pressures.
36 Pump systems operating with on/off cycling, or pumps over-sized for the
37 piping, can create high pressure and fatigue the piping material.
38
39 3. Avoid cavitation which can lead to excessive system noise and, more
40 importantly, can result in the erosion and degradation of the pipe surface and
41 other components.
42
43 4. Properly sized variable-speed (VFD) constant pressure pumping systems
44 and pressure-sustaining valves can alleviate cavitation and water hammer.
45
1 5. The pumps shall be sized to operate at maximum efficiency with the lowest
2 energy usage for the required flow rate.
3
