1. The pressure gage on a 2.5m3 oxygen tank reads 500 kPa.

Determine the amount of oxygen in

the tank if the temperature is 28⁰C and the atmosphere pressure is 97 kPa.

Given:
Pgas= 500kPa
Tgas= 28⁰C
Vtank= 2.5m3
Patm= 97kPa
R= 0.2598 kJ/kg.K
Solution:
Tgas=28⁰C + 273 K
Tgas= 301 K

Pabs= Patm + Pgas

= 97 kPa + 500 kPa
Pabs= 597 kPa

m=𝑅𝑇
(597 𝑘𝑃𝑎)(2.5𝑚3 )
= 𝑘𝐽
(0.2598 )(301𝐾)
𝑘𝑔.𝐾

m= 19.086 kg

 The amount of oxygen in the tank is 19.086 kg.

2. A 400-L rigid tank contains 5kg of air at 25⁰C. Determine the reading on the pressure gage if the
atmospheric pressure is 97 kPa.

Given:
v = 400 L = 0.4m3
m = 5kg
T = 25⁰C =298 K
Patm = 97 kPa
R = 0.287 kPa.m3/kg.K

Solution:
𝑚𝑅𝑇
P= 𝑣
𝑘𝑃𝑎.𝑚3
5𝑘𝑔 (0.287 )(298 𝐾)
𝑘𝑔.𝑘
=
0.4𝑚3
P = 427.63 kPa

Pgage= P - Patm
= 427.63 kPa – 97 kPa
Pgage = 330.63 kPa The reading in the pressure gage is 330.63 kPa.
3. A 1-m3 tank containing air at 25⁰C and 500 kPa is connected through a value to another tank
containing 5kg of air at 35⁰C and 200 kPa. Now the valve is opened and the entire system is
allowed to reach thermal equilibrium with the surrounding, which are 20⁰C. Determine the
volume of the second tank and the final equilibrium pressure of air.

Given:
Tank A
VA =1m3
TA = 25⁰C= 298 K
PA = 500 kPa
Tank B
mB= 5kg
TB = 35⁰C = 308 K
PB = 200Kpa
Surounding teparature = 20⁰C= 293 K
R = 0.287 kJ/kmol.K

Soution:

𝑚𝑅𝑇
P= 𝑉

10.846(0.287)(298)

P= 284 kPa

 The final equilibrium pressure is 284 kPa

4. The pressure in an automobile tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire when the
air temperature is 25⁰C , the pressure gage reads 210 kPa. If the volume of the tire is 0.025m3
,determine the pressure rise in the tire when the air temperature in the tire rises to 50⁰C. Also
determine the amount of air that must be blend off to restore pressure to its original value at
this temperature. Assume the atmospheric pressure is 100kPa.

Given:
Tinitial = 25⁰C
Pgage = 210 kPa (initial)
V = 0.025m3
Tfinal = 50⁰C = 323 K
Patm = 100kPa

Formula:
P1V1 = mRT1 Eq. 1
P2V2 = mRT2 Eq. 2
Assume V of the tire remains constant
V1=V2
𝑃1 𝑇2
P2=
𝑇1

Solution:
Pabs = Pgage + Patm
= 210kPa + 100kPa
Pabs = 310 kPa (initial absolute pressure)

𝑷𝟏 𝑻𝟐
P2 = 𝑻𝟏
∆P = P2 – P1

310(323)
= = 339 kPa - 310kPa
298

P2 =336 kPa ∆P = 26 kPa (rise in pressure)

 Mass of air in the tire

𝑷𝑽 𝑷𝑽
m1 = m2 = ∆m = m1 – m2

336(0.025) 310(0.025)

m1= 0.0906kg m2= 0.0836 kg = 0.0070 kg Air need to be bled off to

restore pressure of its original value
