The dog (It) is in ITS house. ------------
John and I (We) are in OUR cars. The cars are OURS.
You and Robert (You) are in YOUR houses. The houses are YOURS.
John and Jean (They) are in THEIR cars. The cars are THEIRS.

GRAMMAR:

** POSSESSIVE CASE FOR A SINGLE OWNER - ADD ' S


It's John's notebook. They're John's notebooks.
It's Mary's table. They're Mary's tables.
It's Charles's wardrobe. They're Charles's wardrobes.

** POSSESSIVE CASE FOR NOUNS IN THE PLURAL - ADD ' ONLY:


It's the teachers' class. They're the teachers' classes.
It's the executives' office. They're the executives' offices.
It's the professors' car. They're the professors' cars.

EXCEPTION: Irregular plurals not ending in S - ADD ' S


It's the policeman's car. It's the policemen's car.
They're the saleswoman's books. They're the saleswomen's books.

PERSON:
This is John and Mary's office. This is Jim and Herman's office.
This is the salesman and the saleswoman's office.
This is the accountant and the auditor's office.
This is the lawyer and the receptionist's office.

** INDIVIDUAL POSSESSION: MULTIPLE OWNERS FOR MULTIPLE OBJECTS/THINGS - ADD ' S TO EACH
OWNER:
These are John's and Mary's offices.
These are Jim's and Herman's offices.

NOTE: WHOSE is used to ask questions about POSSESSION:


Whose desk is this? Whose teacher is she?
This is Mary’s desk. She is Paul’s teacher.

Whose book is this? This book is Robert's / It's Robert's.


Whose notebook is this? This notebook is Mary and John's / It's Mary and John's.
Whose chair is this? It's the teachers' chair.
Whose telephones are these? These telephones are Tom's and Jeff’s / They are Tom's and Jeff’s.

WHO'S ( WHO IS ) is used to ask questions about a PERSON:


Who is (Who's) always late for class? Who is (Who's) absent today?
Helen is always late for class. Richard is absent today.
