SUBJECT: Service Brake Disc

Wear on Backhoe Loaders
PROBLEM:
There have been reports from the field of fast
wear out of the 230-4017 Brake Discs (2). The 055-
1258 Brake Housing (RH), the 055-1259 Brake
Housing (LH), the 156-1934 Brake Housing (LH
Inner), and the 156-2573 Brake Housing (RH) (1)
are wearing the lining material off the outer most
230-4017 Brake disc (2) at a rate that is in some
cases unacceptable.

SOLUTION:

There are two ways to detect the above wear
condition:

1. Perform an SOS oil analysis of the oil in the

axle housing. Look for high FE readings of 1500
and above in the oil.
2. Refer to the Operating and Maintenance Manual,
"Maintenance Section", "Brake system", "Service
Brake Holding Ability Test" for your specific
machine. Daily perform the "Service Brake
Holding Ability Test".

If either of these two tests indicates a change in

the condition of the braking system, it is
recommended that the brakes be inspected and
rebuilt as necessary. If a rebuild is necessary,
replace all of the 230-4017 Brake Discs (2).
Inspect the 9R-9401 Plates (Brake) (3), the 055-
1258 Brake Housing (RH), the 055-1259 Brake
Housing (LH), the 156-1934 Brake Housing (LH
Inner), and the 156-2573 Brake Housing (RH) (1).
Replace any parts that are damaged.

The surface finish of the wear surface 055-1258

Brake Housing (RH), the wear surface of the 055-
1259 Brake Housing (LH), the wear surface of the
156-1934 Brake Housing (LH Inner), and the wear
surface of the 156-2573 Brake Housing (RH) (1)
should not exceed 40 uin Ra. If the surface finish
of the wear surfaces exceeds 40 uin Ra, you can
machine the surfaces with emory cloth or machine
the surfaces with a scotch bright pad in order to
try to obtain the required surface finish. Do not
remove more than 0.31 mm (0.012 in) of material
from the wear surfaces.

To machine the wear surfaces, install the brake

housings in a lathe. Machine the wear surfaces
with emory cloth or machine the wear surfaces with
a scotch bright pad. If the required surface
finish cannot be obtained by removing less than
0.31 mm (0.012 in) of material from the wear
surface, order a new housing.

Currently, the wear surfaces on both brake

housings in the parts system do not meet the 40
uin Ra requirement. You must use the above process
in order to achieve the desired surface finish.
Efforts are underway to achieve the desired
surface in both production and parts. When the
surface finish requirement has been achieved in
both production and parts, an announcement will be
released.

Refill the axle with TDTO 30W oil and 150 ml (5.1
oz) of 197-0017 Axle and Brake Oil Additive. The
TDTO 30W oil is new for this axle. The TDTO 30W
oil should replace the MTO oil that was previously
used in this axle.

Note: Machines in Table 1 had the 230-4017 Brake

Discs (2) installed at the factory. Part of this
information was published in "Service Magazine",
SEPD0684, 26 May 2003, "A New Brake Disc for the
Rear Axle Improves Service Life" in Table 1.
Anytime that the former 133-7234 Friction Disc is
replaced with the current 230-4017 Brake Discs
(2), the brake housings and the brake plates (3)
should also be replaced. Insure that the axle is
clean. Wash all of the sinter bronze debris from
the axle. Failure to remove all of the sinter
bronze debris from the axle will contaminate the
new 230-4017 Brake Discs that are made with
Kevlar. This will cause increased wear of the
lining material. If Kevlar brake linings are not
desired, the 239-9956 Brake Discs are available.
The 239-9956 Brake Discs contain the same lining
material as the former 133-7234 Friction Disc. Do
not mix the lining materials in the axle.

There will be a PSP forthcoming to cover the time

for machining the housings. The PSP will allow one
and one half (1.5) hours for the machining.
