 IEP & 504 Overview
IEP
• “An IEP is an important legal document.
It spells out your child’s learning needs, the
services the school will provide and how
progress will be measured. Several people,
including parents, are involved in creating
the document. The entire process can be a
great way to sort out your child’s strengths
and weaknesses. Working on the IEP can
help you figure out ways to help him
succeed in school.” (Stanberry)
504
• “Section 504 is a part of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that
prohibits discrimination based upon
disability. Section 504 is an anti-
discrimination, civil rights statute that
requires the needs of students with
disabilities to be met as adequately as
the needs of the non-disabled are
met.” (Durheim)
 Students Who Qualify for Eligibility

IEP 504
• 1. Specific learning disability
• Students can qualify for 504 plans if they have
• 2. Other health impairment
physical or mental impairments that affect or limit
• 3. Autism spectrum disorder any of their abilities to:
• 4. Emotional disturbance
• 5. Speech or language impairment
• walk, breathe, eat, or sleep
• 7. Deafness • communicate, see, hear, or speak
• 8. Hearing impairment
• read, concentrate, think, or learn
• 9. Deaf-blindness
• 10. Orthopedic impairment • stand, bend, lift, or work
• 11. Intellectual disability
• 12. Traumatic brain injury
• 13. Multiple disabilities
 What is Required by the School

IEP
• The school is required to provide
accommodations for the student, at
no cost and have a plan which
requires specific requirements.
504
• The school must provide equal
education and involve a
development plan.
 Evaluation
• For IEP and 504s an evaluation can come from many different sources. The
decision is made by a team, with the students best interest in mind. The
parent needs to get notified by the initial evaluation, and a meeting will
happen every year to see if the student needs services.
 Placement
• Depending on student services needed students will get different placement
if it is adaptive classes, speech services, or getting pulled out of class.
Students will get placed where the needs are best serviced.
