GENERAL COURSE INFO

Chemistry 111 - Experimental Chemistry I - Section 042: Summer 2017

Instructor: Dr. Mary L. Gray

Summer 2017 Labs

The virtual labs, Late Nite Labs, will be used as the software provider. I have created a course in
www.latenitelabs.com and you must enroll by providing the
Section Code: 23437477 for CHEM 111, Course Section 042

Once you have enrolled, you will find a list of lab assignments with starting and due dates. Since
these are virtual labs, you may complete them at your convenience within the starting time and
due date time.

Required Materials:
1.) An access code to www.latenitelabs.com
2.) Calculator

A Brief synopsis of the lab:

The goal of the lab is simple: You will actively learn scientific data acquisition, quantitative and
qualitative chemistry techniques, and scientific reporting while receiving “hands-on experience”
with chemistry concepts.
When you first log into the Late Nite Labs course and sign up for the course using the section
code number given to you above, you will notice that there are a number of experiments waiting
to be completed. The labs are listed in Late Nite Labs alphabetically. You should complete the
labs according to the Lab Schedule included with this syllabus. With every experiment there are
a number of short answer problems that must be completed in order to receive credit for the lab.
Each experiment may be run as many times as you like, and you may change your answers as
many times as you want up until the due date for that experiment. Be sure to save your data.

In addition to completing the scheduled lab, an Abstract of approximately 100 to 250 words
will be required from each student.

Your Abstract should contain a:

1. brief statement as to the purpose of the experiment
2. brief summary of the procedure
3. statement of the pertinent results of the experiment
4. short conclusion: Was the experiment a success? What did you learn?

As you perform the virtual lab, you will take notes in the lab note section provided. I will have
access to your notes once you submit your lab for grading. It will be easy to simply include the
Lab Abstract to your lab notes prior to submitting your lab for grading.

Reports:
When you submit your lab, I will see the last iteration of your lab notes, the Abstract that you
included with your lab notes, and your answers to the questions provided. This is what you will
be graded on. Once you submit your lab, you will be unable to access that experiment and/or
change your answers. Do not forget to include your Abstract. Lab reports must be submitted on
time. No additional time to complete a lab will be granted.

GRADING:

A 93 – 100%
A- 90 – 92 %
B+ 87 – 89 %
B 83 – 86 %
B- 80 – 82 %
C+ 77 – 79 %

Institution Statement Concerning Academic Integrity (University Policy 49-20)

Definition and expectations: Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open,
honest, and responsible manner. Academic integrity is a basic guiding principle for all academic
activity at The Pennsylvania State University, and all members of the University community are
expected to act in accordance with this principle. Consistent with this expectation, the
University's Code of Conduct states that all students should act with personal integrity, respect
other students' dignity, rights and property, and help create and maintain an environment in
which all can succeed through the fruits of their efforts.

Academic integrity includes a commitment not to engage in or tolerate acts of falsification,

misrepresentation, or deception. Such acts of dishonesty violate the fundamental ethical
principles of the University community and compromise the worth of work completed by others.

Disabilities Statement

Note to students with disabilities: Penn State welcomes students with disabilities into the
University's educational programs. If you have a disability-related need for modifications or
reasonable accommodations in this course, please inform the instructor or contact Disability
Services, 610-396-6410, 153 Franco Building, as early in the semester as possible.

This syllabus is subject to change by the instructor as deemed necessary.
