CDT Modules Talk

 Benefits of the CDT shine here, mixture of EEE and non-EEE people help to bring everyone to standard
 Topic overview:
1. Electricity principles- both the low level (technical) stuff, e.g. three-phase, reactive power, and
power flow to the high level (delivery) stuff like electricity trading and markets [IMPERIAL]. Also
programming in the python language. Have a lab+report and a test on the principles, an oral exam,
and a python coding assignment (also another python assignment later)
2. Comms- communication protocols (the language that devices speak to each other in), OSI layers (the
general overview of all of the process that take place in communication, both physical and non-
physical). More of a standalone comms module. Have a presentation on protocols and labs.
3. Power electronics- Math focuses and on the low level material, converters (AC-DC-HV-LV), includes
building your own converter with a PCB, explaining the design [IMPERIAL]
4. Protection and control- Why we need protection, and how it works. Control part expands on the
material in the electronics module. Also MATLAB & Simulink teaching. Literature review on an area
of protection that interests you.
5. Offshore grids- High HVDC focus, especially on the technical side. Modelling of networks. Includes a
HVDC literature review and a lab + report
6. Asset management- Get taught AI and data analysis techniques like Neural networks and asset
management practices. Literature review on intelligent data analysis and condition monitoring,
more python on using intelligent algorithms and a group presentation on where AM went wrong and
was not followed.
7. Risk- Risks to the power system, how to plan for it, probability theory, security and reliability
standards, using Monte Carlo models. Assignment [IMPERIAL] and Oral Exam
 LCNF and RIIO Group project should be highly critical. What do these companies miss out, where is the room
for improvement, what other solutions could they have perhaps implemented?

To bear in mind:

 First module very intense at the end

o Don’t be afraid to ask for help, from the supervisors, buddies and fellow cohort group.
 Everyone is extremely friendly and open
 The reading lists can be very helpful, highly encourage to read them to both get a better idea of the module
and whether to do it as a PhD topic
