LEARNING ACTIVITY 2

DEVELOPMENT EVIDENCE: GIVING ADVICE

These people are facing changes in their life. Read their situations below:

I am Gary. I work for an ONG called White Hands.

I support projects in rural areas from my office. I
really enjoy my job. Now my organization is
implementing a new system called "home-office".
Twice a week I will have to stay home and work
from my computer, or telecommute. My boss says
it will be a good change as we will be able to work
from home. I find it rather awkward. I live alone
and have nobody to talk with. Besides, all my
friends are at the office. I will really miss the social
interaction on those days. What if I can't find a file
and I need assistance from a co-worker? What if I

need to talk to my boss but he is not online?

I don’t really feel comfortable with this new idea of telecommuting. I wish I
could come to the office every day I have done for the past 5 years.
My name is Amanda. I am a hairdresser. I work in
a beauty shop in the north of the city. I am a single
mother and have two beautiful sons. Mike is nine
and Steve is two. While I work, my mother takes
care of my sons. She has always supported me.
But now my mom is really sick. The doctor
recommended her moving to a quieter place. So,
she is moving in with my brother who lives in a
small town. If my mother moves, I will probably
have to quit my job as I don’t have anybody to
take care of my kids. I wouldn’t leave them with a
stranger, especially the little one. Fuente: SENA

I have some savings and I have considered Fuente: SENA

opening my own beauty shop in my neighborhood
so I can be near my kids. But what if the business does not turn out well? I
could lose all my savings. I don’t really know what to do. I am afraid of the
change.

Dear Gary

Hello Gary, my name is Yara Elenis, I am a virtual instructor of the Seine, I read your story and
it caught my attention and I would like to make some suggestions that could work for you,
because when I started working as a virtual instructor, in some I felt insecure, I thought things
would be very complicated and the interaction would be very impersonal, but I discovered that
everything was very different from what I imagined, and I ended up adapting quickly, things
improved much more, due to the facilities and advantages offered by ICT today. If I do not make
the attempt in that occasion and I would have let myself be carried away by fear, I would not
have managed to move forward nor would I have been able to take off from where I was.

From my personal experience, I advise you to use media such as videoconferencing, to be in

contact with the staff of the office, I also suggest that one of the things you could do, is to create
a database, which will help you access any file at any time and from anywhere and so on, you
should not depend so much on the help of your colleagues, also those days when you do not go
to the company you can agree with them to go out for lunch or dinner and so you will not miss it
so much to his companions.

If you assume this challenge that has been presented to you and have an open mind to change,
you will be given the opportunity to grow and develop your skills as a professional, at the
beginning it will be difficult but soon you will adapt to your new way of working and will
realize that it has its advantages, work from home, you can manage your work schedule and can
perform other activities to have a more flexible schedule, that being in the office could not do,
such as being able to enroll in a gym, go to run or walk in the morning, which will allow you to
meet new people with whom you can interact and make new friends and not depend so much on
the colleagues you have in your work.

Finally if you want to be a successful person, you drink to challenge each day to be better,
proposing goals to meet, be willing to face any obstacle that may arise, at the beginning the
changes are traumatic and can cause terror, but the that does not take risks does not advance and
remains static on the first rung without climbing.

Not being more I hope that you serve my advice. Cheer up Gary!

Sincerely:

Yara Elenis
