BFC 32202 – ENGINEERS & SOCIETY

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

• Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles, along with

experience, judgement and common sense, to practical purposes of the design,
analysis and operation of structures, machines and systems.
• While science allows us to gain an understanding of the world and the universe,
engineering enables this understanding to come to life through problem solving,
designing and building things.

Scientists investigate that which already is.

Engineers create that which has never been.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

• The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) defines

“engineering” as

the profession in which knowledge of the

mathematical and natural sciences gained by
study, experience, and practice applied with
judgement to develop ways to utilise,
economically, the materials and forces of
nature for the benefit of mankind

• Aesthetics as well as function found
in the many marvels of engineering,
both ancient and modern, is an
engineering genius in the form of art.
• Engineers are the ones who make
architects’ dreams come true.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is an
approximation
• The mathematics of engineering
system are often used to solve
engineering problems.
• There are many solutions. The aim is
to arrive at a good solution, which is
a creative activity that requires
imagination and decision-making.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is about
measurement, estimation
and projection
• Water contamination, noise and
vibration from transport, air quality,
traffic volume, river flow, etc. are just
some of the many useful parameters
studied by engineers.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is about
modelling and simulation
• By using technological advancements
such as software applications,
validation and verification of an
engineering analysis are performed
through modelling and simulation.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is about
communication and
delivery
• Producing technical reports,
delivering presentations and dealing
with people (employers, colleagues,
clients, and the general public) are all
fundamental to engineering practice.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING?

Engineering is about
innovation
• New devices, material selection and
viable processes are developed by

CIVIL ENGINEERING

• Civil Engineering is the improvement

of civil society through the
application of scientific knowledge.
• Civil requirements in today’s society
are focused on meeting basic human
needs and assisting people in their
daily lives.
• These needs are met by improving
infrastructure and common utilities.

BFC 32202 – ENGINEERS & SOCIETY

CIVIL ENGINEERING

• Environmental consideration in civil

engineering ensures that all
structures and utilities are safe,
economical and environmentally-
sound.
• Civil engineering is a wide-ranging
profession that includes several
specialised sub-disciplines, such as
structural engineering, transportation
engineering, geotechnical engineering JST Factory, Gelang Patah, Johor
and water resources engineering.
BDD/FKAAS/UTHM

BFC 32202 – ENGINEERS & SOCIETY

THE CIVIL ENGINEER

• Civil engineers are practitioners of

civil engineering.
• Civil engineers are highly trained
professionals who conceive, design,
construct, supervise, operate and
maintain infrastructure projects and
systems such as roads, buildings,
airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and
water supply systems.

BFC 32202 – ENGINEERS & SOCIETY

THE CIVIL ENGINEER

• Many civil engineers hold supervisory

or administrative positions ranging
from site supervisor to city engineer,
public works director, and city
manager.
• They are tasked with ensuring that
projects adhere to budgetary and
environmental requirements, and safe
work practices are followed at
construction sites.

BDD/FKAAS/UTHM

BFC 32202 – ENGINEERS & SOCIETY

THE CIVIL ENGINEER

• Other civil engineers work in design,

construction, research, and teaching.
• Civil engineers may work indoors in
offices or outdoors at construction
sites. Some jobs may require frequent
relocation to different areas and
offices in jobsite trailers.
• Civil engineers work with others on
projects and may be assisted by civil
engineering technicians.

WHAT DO CIVIL ENGINEERS DO?

Analyse long range plans, survey reports, maps, and other data to plan and design projects

Consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards,

and other factors during the planning and risk-analysis stages of a project

Compile and submit permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies, verifying
that projects comply with various regulations

Oversee and analyse the results of soil testing to determine the adequacy and strength
of foundations

Analyse the results of tests on building materials, such as concrete, wood, asphalt, or steel, for
use in particular projects

BDD/FKAAS/UTHM

BFC 32202 – ENGINEERS & SOCIETY

WHAT DO CIVIL ENGINEERS DO?

Prepare cost estimates for materials, equipment, or labour to determine a project’s economic
feasibility

Use design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic systems, and
structures in line with industry and government standards

Perform or oversee surveying operations to establish building locations, site layouts,

reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction

Manage the repair, maintenance, and replacement of public and private infrastructure

Present findings to the public on topics such as bid proposals, environmental impact
statements, or property descriptions

ENGINEERING IN SOCIETY

• Engineering turns science into something

tangible and useful to society. Engineering is
about creating something based on the request
Scientific
Knowledge from society. Engineers fulfil this need by
creating a complete product using scientific
ENGINEERING knowledge.
• Society is rarely exposed to “engineering”. The
Societal Needs word “science” is more easily understood and
society has the impression that science is
directly applied to society. But it is engineering
that is directly applied to society.

ENGINEERING IN SOCIETY

• Society relates civil engineering with structures, but it is also about maintaining and
adapting the infrastructure that we depend on every day such as roads, railways and
bridges; energy and water supply; waste networks and flood defences.
• Civil engineers have to keep this infrastructure running effectively and adapt it to
meet challenges, which include population growth, climate change and natural
disasters.
• In some cases, they must also find ways to deliver the infrastructure needed under
budgetary constraints.
• In short, civil engineers have to come up with solutions to complex problems and
implement them. It is not just a job, but a social responsibility.
