ASSIGNMENT

ENGINEERING CURVES

1. Construct an ellipse with Arc of circle when the major axis is 120 mm and the distance between the foci is
108 mm. Determine the length of the minor axis.

2. Construct an ellipse with Concentric Circle method when its major axis is 90 mm and minor axis is 55
mm.

3. A plot of ground is in the shape of a rectangle 110m x 50 m. Inscribe an elliptical lawn in it by using
oblong method. Take a scale of 1:1000.

4. Construct an ellipse when a pair of Conjugate Diameters AB and CD are equal to 110 mm and 50 mm
respectively. The angle between the conjugate diameters is 70o.(parallelogram method)

5. Construct a parabola within a parallelogram of sides 110mm x 50 mm. One of the inclined angle between
the sides is 70o.

6. A ball thrown from the ground level reaches a maximum height of 5 m and travels a horizontal distance
of 11 m from the point of projection. Trace the path of the ball (parabola).

7. A fountain jet discharges water from ground level at an inclination of 50o to the ground. The jet travels a
horizontal distance of 9 m from the point of discharge and fall on the ground. Trace the path of the jet
(parabola by tangent method)

8. A coin of 40 mm diameter rolls over a horizontal table without slipping. A point on the circumference of
the coin is in contact with the table surface in the beginning and after one complete revolution. Draw the
cycloidal path traced by the point. Draw a tangent and normal at any point on the curve.

9. A circular disc of 40 mm diameter rolls outside another circle of 120 mm diameter for one revolution.
Draw the path traced by a point, which is at a distance 25 mm from the center of the rolling circle
(superior epitrochoid)

10. Draw an inferior epitrochoid of base circle 150 mm diameter and rolling circle 50 mm diameter. The
tracing point P is 20 mm from the center of the rolling circle.

11. A circle of 40 mm diameter rolls inside another circle of 160 mm diameter for one revolution. Draw the
locus of the point which is at a distance of 25 mm from the center of the rolling circle.(superior
hypotrochoid)

12. A circle of 40 mm diameter rolls inside another circle of 160 mm diameter for one revolution. Draw the
locus of a point which is at a distance of 15 mm from the center of the rolling circle.( inferior
hypotrochoid)

13. A wheel 50 mm diameter rolls on a straight road surface without slip. Trace the path of a point which is at
a radius of 30 mm from the center of the wheel, for one complete revolution of the wheel (superior
trochoid).

14. A wheel 50 mm diameter rolls on a straight road surface without any slip. Trace the path of a point on one
of the spokes 10 mm from the rim towards the center of the wheel for one complete revolution (inferior
trochoid)
