5E Lesson Plan Template

Teacher: Patrice Williams

Date: January 2019

Subject area/course/grade level: General Education/Second Grade

Materials: Technology devices, math/science journals, pencils

Standards (State and ISTE Standards for Students): ALCOS: 2.2 Create an algorithm for other learners to
follow.
ISTE 5d: Students understand how automation works and use algorithmic thinking to develop a sequence
of steps to create and test automated solutions.

Objectives: In the computer lab, students will independently work upon completion of the coding sequence
activity within one hour.

Differentiation Strategies (How will the lesson address the various learning styles of the students and the
needs of those with special needs?): Students will collaborate in their intervention small groups to perform
an algorithm used for code sequencing.

ENGAGEMENT:

Students will create an algorithm and explore the process of coding by observing coding websites such as
code.org:
https://hourofcode.com/us/how-to

As the teacher facilitates the process, students will observe the coding sequence process.
Teacher will conduct a verbal conference, individually, to provide constructive feedback.
Teacher will comment on any misconceptions about coding, algorithms and its process.

EXPLORATION:

Students will use desktop computers, independently, to explore the process of coding while creating an
algorithm.
https://studio.code.org/congrats?i=_1_7321e3f4857f2a0fc7eb25610e7f39f1&s=YXF1YXRpYw==

Teacher facilitate tour on code.org as the students observe the algorithms while using the coding process.
Teacher will model how the coding sequences correlate with algorithms. Teacher will also explore the ways
coding can affect our world.
EXPLANATION:
The teacher will explain a model of an algorithm and the strategy of coding to allow students to further gain
knowledge of the process.
As a formative assessment, teacher will ask for students’ responses during the presentation:

Approved January, 2013

1.) How would the algorithm be effective in performing coding sequencing?
2.) How are coding sequence impact the technological culture?
3.) What negative affect does coding apply to the culture?
Teacher will model coding, while students observe the process. They will record all notes in their science
journal.
ELABORATION:

Students will individually create an algorithm applied to a coding sequence from code.org:
https://studio.code.org/congrats?i=_1_7321e3f4857f2a0fc7eb25610e7f39f1&s=YXF1YXRpYw==

Students will be graded upon the following:

Name of person
Composition of algorithm
Evidence of coding sequence application
EVALUATION:

Teacher will model the creation and application of algorithms to perform code sequencing within time
allowed:
