DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Description
The FV-0580 and FV-0581are airborne switchers designed to control images from external and/or internal cameras
installed on board an aircraft.
The design is intended primarily to satisfy the low cost requirement for a Video Switch Unit to be used with the FV-
0835 6” LCD monitor as part of the CabinVu 123 system. The unit is, however to be designed in such a way that it
may be applicable to a wider range of aircraft.

PIN Number FV-0580xzzykmmn or FV-0581xzzykmmn

Where
x = P for PAL or x = N for NTSC
zz = 50 for 50 ohms input or zz = 75 for 75 ohms input
y = B for balanced video input; U for unbalanced video input;
k = L for legacy systems; N for normal systems
mm = 50 for 50 ohms output or mm = 75 for 75 ohms output
n = B for balanced video output or n = U for unbalanced video output

A. General
1.1 The FV-0580 and FV-0581 are airborne switchers designed to control images from external and/or internal
cameras installed on board an aircraft.
1.2 The design is intended primarily to satisfy the a low cost requirement for a Video Switch Unit to be used with
the LCD monitors as part of the CabinVu 123 system. The unit is, however, to be designed in such a way that it
may be applicable to a wider range of aircraft.
1.3 The unit is mounted in the cabin overhead panelling.

B. Electrical Specification
2.1.1 Video
2.1.2 The units accept video from up to 4 cameras (FV-0580) or 8 cameras (FV-0581), each on its own connector.
2.1.3 The cameras may be PAL or NTSC standard (specified at time of order).
2.1.4 The unit caters for both unbalanced and balanced video (specified at time of order).
2.1.5 Input Termination is defined by the PIN number.
2.1.6 The units are to output two channels of balanced composite video, at a termination dependent on the part number.
These are to be able to be selected independently, and are to each have OSD camera titling.
2.1.7 Each of the two channels has two independent video outputs, so can support two monitors which will each have
duplicated video data.
2.1.8 The Legacy or Normal system is defined by the PIN number.
In Legacy system, input video channels are selected by individual external inputs using rotary switches.
In Normal system, input video channels are selected by external inputs using momentary toggle switches.
2.1.9 An OSD function is included in the design to enable text to be defined, and superimposed on the video. It is
possible to program different text for the NORMAL selection of a camera, and for the ALARM selection of the
same camera. The text is to be stored in EEPROM
2.1.10 Control for the OSD set up is achieved via an RS232 link that is externally accessible through the Serial Port
connections on the Main Connector SK1.
2.1.11 There are 8 General Purpose Inputs, which can be used to override current Channel selections, or to change the
OSD text overlaid.
2.1.12 There are two On/Off inputs, which when grounded cause power to be applied to the FV-0580 or FV-0581 unit.
When released, power is again disconnected from the FV-0580 or FV-0581.

D. Software Safety Assessment

4.1 The unit is to be used for video security monitoring both in the air and on the ground, and has no TSO, or
mandated uses.
4.2 Anomalous behaviour of the unit, either complete or partial failure would have “no effect on aircraft operational
capability or pilot workload.”
4.3 The conclusion of the SSA is therefore that the correct category of software for the unit is RTCA DO178B
Level E

E. Airworthiness
5.1 The Unit is designed to operate on large commercial aircraft, and will therefore comply with the following:
CS-25, specifically 1301, 1309, X1315, 1322, 1353, 1357, X1360, 1381, 1431.
5.2 RTCA DO160E\ED-14E, for cabin overhead mounted equipment

OPERATION

General

The FV-0580 and FV-0581 is powered by 28Vdc input from the DC non-essential bus via the main 39 pin connector
SK1. The unit distributes the 28VDC to all the other Individual CabinVu 123 units, it also comprises of video
switching for up to 4 or 8 video inputs and OSD (On Screen Display) circuitry.
N.B. With the power switch on the FV-1050 set to “Standby” 28VDC is available to this unit only and not to any other
associated component of this system, ie FV-0410 or FV-0835.

TESTING AND FAULT ISOLATION

TESTING
1.0 Introduction
This document specifies how to test the FV-0580 and FV-0581 Video Switch Unist.

2.0 Initial Requirements

The following Test Equipment is required:
 28V D.C. bench supply.
STT Test Lead (with all necessary ‘break outs’)
 Test Pattern Generator
PC or Laptop with RS232 port and Hyper terminal s/w
Balun Isolation transformer (Brownhills 1003 PB or equivalent)
4 off for FV-0580 or, 8 off for FV-0581 Video Sources (Video Cameras)
 Digital Multimeter
Oscilloscope, better than 50MHz with a good video trigger
 Colour Monitor terminated in 75R.

Ensure that the FV-0580 or FV-0581 pcb (FV05 PCB, same for both units) is correctly terminated for the required
System Specification, and that the test sources are also driven from the same resistance.
Ensure that the FV-0580 or FV-0581 is of the correct video standard for the required system specification, as are the
test sources.

3.0 Power Tests

3.1 The PCBs will be fully assembled and fitted into the metalwork according to AS0281. A Test switch or FV1050
(Control Panel) and monitors or FV-0835 (6” LCD Monitor) will be connected to the UUT via the 39 pin MIL-C
connector and video inputs will be connected via 6 pin MIL-C connectors.
3.2 Ensure that the Power switch on the FV1050 is in the OFF position or SK1 pins V or U are not connected to 0V on
the FV-0580 or FV-0581.
3.3 Connect multimeter across SK1 power inputs pins (m and r) and ensure that the resistance measured is greater than
1MOhm.
3.4 Connect the 28V bench power supply to the unit across SK1 Pins r (+28V dc) and m (0V) and switch ON. Select
the Power switch on the FV1050 to the ON position or connect SK1 pins V or U to 0V (this simulates the FV-
1050 in the ON position). Ensure that the power drawn from the supply is between 100mA +/-10mA (with no
cameras or monitor connected).

4.0 Video Checks

4.1 Apply unbalanced 75 ohms video signal from the Test Pattern Generator to CAM1 pins 1and 5 (+ and - resp).
4.2 Connect an Oscilloscope and measure the video signal at SK1 pins f and P (+ and - resp) for monitor 1 and at SK1
pins T and i for monitor 2.
4.3 Check that the Video height is nominally 1.0V p-p, and that the Video Syncs are 300mV p-p +/- 10%.
4.4 Connect the monitor 1 to SK1 pins f and P (+ and - resp) and monitor 2 to SK1 pins T and i. Check that the
images displayed on the monitor are satisfactory, with no visual distortions.
4.5 Repeat above with Camera 2 (CAM2 pins 1 and 5)
4.6 Repeat above with Camera 3 (CAM3 pins 1 and 5)
4.7 Repeat above with Camera 4 (CAM4 pins 1 and 5)
4.8 For FV-0581, Repeat the above with Cameras 5,6,7 and 8 (Pins 1 and 5).
4.9 Switch OFF

PERFORM FINAL CONFIDENCE TEST WITH COMPLETE CABINVU 123 SYSTEM (FV-0410, FV-0835, FV-
1050 with the FV-0580 0r 0581) ALL CONNECTED.
