WCDMA/GSM PAGING Load LAC Split Guideline

The objective of this paper is to deliver the both WCDMA or

GSM paging load calculation method for easier dimensioning and

Optimization in future and ease confusion when calculating paging

Load for customer. This paper explains the phenomena how the

Paging load was affected by paging messages and provide better

Understanding on how to derive the paging calculation. By using

the method of paging messages limitation in an hour, the accuracy

of its load is more practical to consider whether need a LAC split

when the LAC is too large which might cause miss paged on

mobile

terminated call.

2 WCDMA Paging

Parameter of PCH and FACH based on 3GPP

In Huawei , by default 240 bits transport block size means that

more than 1 paging records can be transmitted in one single 10ms

PCH TTI. This results 24Kbps paging capability and it has larger

paging load than 8Kbps. We can see using the below command :

ADD UPCHDYNTFS: CELLID=XXX, RLCSIZE=240,

According 3GPP it only allows maximum 8 paging records to be

sent but practically it still limited and depend on the paging type:

 PCH TBS has 7 bit header

 TMSI page from CN is 5Byte in size
( 240-7) / 5*8= 5 pages

2019-2-28 Page4, Total10

 IMSI page from CN is 9Byte in size

( 240-7) / 9*8 = 3 pages

Due to transport channel PCH and FACH has to share and to be

mapped to physical channel as shown in the chart below, the

paging bottle neck will further restrict by following detail:

240 bits /600bits = 31% <> 240bits/768 bits= 40 % ,

Based on this limitation, we can assume the average of 35% which

we are going to use to finalize the calculation.

3 3G LAC Split Guideline

3.1 Calculation Method: TMSI

Decision on LAC split is given below:

Calculate the “PCH PHYSICAL CHANNEL UTILITY RATIO” for each LAC.

If PCH Physical Channel Utility Ratio is above 35% over the reporting
period analyze the Paging Success Rate as reported by the Core
Network.

Note: Paging Success Rate is affected by many factors. A relationship

between high PCH physical channel utility ratio and CN paging success
rate degradation should be established before LAC split.

Formula for PHYSICAL CHANNEL UTILITY RATIO (%) is:

PCH Physical Channel Utility Ratio =

<VS.UTRAN.AttPaging1> /({SP}*60*5/0.01)

where SP is Sampling Period. SP=60 for hourly data.

X= 1800000 ( 0.35 ) = 630,000 messages in an hour

This result not more than 630,000 messages per hour is recommended
for 24Kbps paging configuration in one LAC

4 GSM Paging

In GSM, different configurations of access grant channel affecting the

paging messages calculation.

In 51 TDMA frames combined BCCH/SDCCH, AGCH control channel

typically set to 1 will result 2 CCCH blocks for Paging. Whereas, in non-
combined configuration, if AGCH set to 2 or 1 it will reserve 7 CCCH
blocks or 8 CCCH blocks respectively for paging usage. Below is frames
structure for combined and non-combined layout.

Combined

*3 CCCH Blocks*

Non -Combined

*9 CCCH Blocks*

In GSM , paged mobile stations per paging request message is from 2 to 4,

in this case we take average of 3 for estimation.

5 GSM LAC Split Guideline

By combined BCCH/SDCCH setting with AGCH=1

Average of either TMSI/IMSI is about 3 and results 6 messages over

235ms

3600SEC/0.235SEC*6

=91915 PAGING MESSAGE

We estimate 2 paging messages needed for each mobile due to re-

paging

91915/2 = 45,957 Messages/ Busy Hour

This result not more than 45,957 paging messages per hour is
recommended in one LAC

WCDMA/GSM PAGING Load LAC Split Guideline

By non –combined setting with AGCH =2

Average of either TMSI/IMSI is about 3 and results 21 messages over

235ms.

3600SEC/0.235SEC*21

= 321702 of Paging Messages

We estimate 2 paging messages needed for each mobile due to re-

paging

321702/2 = 160,851 Messages/Busy Hour

This result not more than 160,851 paging messages per hour is
recommended in one LAC

By non –combined setting with AGCH =1

Average of either TMSI/IMSI is about 3 and results 24 messages over

235ms.

3600SEC/0.235SEC*24
= 367659 of Paging Messages

We estimate 2 paging messages needed for each mobile due to re-

paging

367659/2 = 183829 Messages/Busy hour

This result not more than 183,829 paging messages per hour is

recommended in one LAC

6 Conclusion

Monitoring Maximum Paging Messages in an hour in a network as proper

paging load estimation for WCDMA or GSM technology can guide to
decide whether LAC is overdesigned or not during busy hour scenario in
live mobile network. This helps to solve unexpected paging issues before
further considering other optimization approach. It plays a key factor to
build a healthier network as mobile subscribers are always in growth in
future.
