Key Information
CAD import in a 3rd party proprietary format can be done in two ways:
• CAD-Exchange
• Reads a file and constructs geometry without CAD libraries
• No CAD license required
• No platform limitations
• Reads a variety of CAD formats
• Supports face names
• CAD-Clients
• Uses CAD package Kernel to create geometry for Simcenter STAR-CCM+
• Drives CAD Design Parameters
• Maintains face names during design changes
• Maintains face names created in Simcenter STAR-CCM+
• Allows assembly replacement

STAR-CCM+
• Simcenter STAR-CCM+ can drive a CAD system while running on a remote cluster
• The CAD system hosts the design change thus the parent assembly is automatically
updated as the design is modified
• Leave CAD files in a central location
• Transfer is done via socket connection

Find better designs in the shortest time / fewest runs. The user inputs a
range for all of the variables and the SHERPA method attempts to find the
best design within the prescribed number of runs
1) Weighted combination of multiple objectives – 1 or more objectives and
Optimization constraints are combined into a single objective function that SHERPA tries
to either maximize or minimize
2) Pareto optimization – 2 or more objectives that are individually optimized
to identify the optimum trade-off relationship
DOE
Users plug in a range of values and Design Manager runs a sub set of the
grid. Either 2 and 3 level full factorials DoE are supported
Realize the variation of the outputs given small changes to the inputs, i.e.
manufacturing or installation tolerance
Stochastic
Probabilistic Latin hypercube sampling which distributes variables according
a user defined probability distribution function. Used to determine how
random variation in a design inputs effects design outputs

Variable
Here the user is reading the design parameters from the simulation,
SETUP defining the constraints and goals as well as defining the run behavior
Here the user is not interacting with the tool directly. The tool is
RUN however driving the simulations and collecting the results, this is the
bulk of time and STAR-CCM+ license usage, usually.
This is the same as RUN, functionally, but here the user can directly
MONITOR see the simulation outputs as they come in.
In this step the user is getting the engineering value back. Here is
POST where all of the runs are collected, organized and analyzed. This steps
drives an engineering decision.

Design Manager allows users to run multiple simulations concurrently on high performance
compute resources easily and effectively.
• Pre-Allocation: Users will submit the Design Manager project and all of the resources for the
study are reserved via the queue, and the design manager will manage the submission of
designs within the reserved resource. Supporting Power Tokens and Power Sessions
• Local (Head/Vis Node) Submission: Users will submit the study and the resources for each
design are submitted to the queue. The Design Manager server process must be on the a node
with access to the shared file system and the ability to submit to the queue.

Efficient: Run jobs in the most efficient way for the simulation on any
number of cores within the allocated resource.
Key Information
Key Information
Users will submit the Design Manager Project to the queue. Resources should be sized Setup
based on total resources desired for the study. Design Manager will then act as its own
queueing system within the resources allocated by the queue. • The study is setup locally
• Benefits:
• Resources are allocated for the entire study thus allowing the study to complete Transfer
without having individual jobs ‘held up’ in the queue
• The study and the
• Most efficient usage of resource for exploration simulation to the cluster
• Drawback:
• When doing optimization there can be some resource efficiency loss as the design Submit
manager must wait for an entire SHERPA cycle to finish before starting the next
cycle • Submit the Design
Manager job to the queue
Key Information
The Design Manager server is started on a node that has the ability to submit to the Setup
queue (Head or Vis). The users then starts the study from the Design Manager Client
(local or remote). Design Manager will submit each design to the queue • The study is setup locally
Transfer
• Benefits:
• Simple setup that leverages the client server capability of Simcenter STAR-CCM+ • The study and the
simulation to the cluster
so users can submit jobs to the queue directly from the user interface
