Study Types (Design Manager)

Evaluate CAD parametric model robustness to parameter variance from 3D-

CAD CAD or CAD-Client parameters
Robustness The user specifies a list of variants for a Manual sampling or a range for
each parameter for a Sweep sampling

Run the part through a pre-defined set of conditions

Manual
The user supplies a list of designs and design manager runs them

Understand performance of the device as function of something else

Sweep
The user specifies a range and increment for each study variable and

Evaluate CAD parametric model robustness to parameter variance from 3D-

CAD or CAD-Client parameters
CAD
Robustness The user specifies a range for each parameter and the number of
evaluation for the LHS plan

Find better designs in the shortest time / fewest runs. The user inputs a
range for all of the variables and the SHERPA method attempts to find the
best design within the prescribed number of runs
1) Weighted combination of multiple objectives – 1 or more objectives and
Optimization constraints are combined into a single objective function that SHERPA tries
to either maximize or minimize
2) Pareto optimization – 2 or more objectives that are individually optimized
to identify the optimum trade-off relationship

DOE
Users plug in a range of values and Design Manager runs a sub set of the
grid. Either 2 and 3 level full factorials DoE are supported

Realize the variation of the outputs given small changes to the inputs, i.e.
manufacturing or installation tolerance

Stochastic
Probabilistic Latin hypercube sampling which distributes variables according
a user defined probability distribution function. Used to determine how
random variation in a design inputs effects design outputs

Flexible Licensing
Flexible Licensing all along the Process

Here the user is reading the design parameters from the simulation,
SETUP defining the constraints and goals as well as defining the run behavior

Here the user is not interacting with the tool directly. The tool is
RUN however driving the simulations and collecting the results, this is the
bulk of time and STAR-CCM+ license usage, usually.

This is the same as RUN, functionally, but here the user can directly
MONITOR see the simulation outputs as they come in.

In this step the user is getting the engineering value back. Here is
POST where all of the runs are collected, organized and analyzed. This steps
drives an engineering decision.

Running on Clusters
Running on Clusters

Design Manager allows users to run multiple simulations concurrently on high performance
compute resources easily and effectively.

There are currently two methods to do this:

• Pre-Allocation: Users will submit the Design Manager project and all of the resources for the
study are reserved via the queue, and the design manager will manage the submission of
designs within the reserved resource. Supporting Power Tokens and Power Sessions

• Local (Head/Vis Node) Submission: Users will submit the study and the resources for each
design are submitted to the queue. The Design Manager server process must be on the a node
with access to the shared file system and the ability to submit to the queue.

Page 63 Siemens PLM Software
Efficient Cluster Usage with Pre-Allocation

Key Information

Pre-allocation enables users to run design studies in a more familiar,

efficient and reliable way The system queue allocates the
requested resources to Design Manager
which creates and manages its own
Familiar: In Simcenter STAR-CCM+ users submit 1 job to a cluster via queueing of those allocated resources
the queueing system. When submitting in pre-allocation mode, Design
Manager behaves the same way.

Efficient Cluster Usage with Pre-Allocation

Key Information

Pre-allocation enables users to run design studies in a more familiar,

efficient and reliable way

Efficient: Run jobs in the most efficient way for the simulation on any
number of cores within the allocated resource.

• If a cluster has 16 cores per node, pre-allocation allows to run

• 16 concurrent designs on 1 core or Design Manager master process
• 1 design on 16 cores and anywhere in between.

• Efficiently run simulations on as many or as few cores as needed

• Resources are allocated for the entire study thus allowing the study to complete Transfer

Key Information
