1. Concept

A recycle bin is a container used to hold recyclables before they are taken to recycling
centres. Recycling bins exist in various sizes for use in homes, offices, and large
public facilities. Separate containers are often provided for paper, tin or aluminium
cans, and glass or plastic bottles. To manage the household solid waste, the container
also separate food waste. The indoor recycle bin act as temporary storage container
before it went to outdoor recycle bin which will be collected by the concessioner. The
concepts of recycle bin usually are designed to be easily recognizable, and are marked
with slogans promoting recycling on a blue or green background along with the
universal recycling symbol. Others are intentionally unobtrusive. Bins are sometimes
different colours so that user may differentiate between the types of materials to be
placed in them. While there is no universal standard, the colour blue is commonly
used to indicate a bin is for recycling in public settings.

2. Issues/Problems

i. Typical indoor bin are designed without separation for particular waste. All
waste is mixed up together and it is hard to practice separation of household
solid waste and overcome the problem.
ii. By having standard bin for recycling in house, it takes a quite large area to
place the recycling bin since it have three which separate plastic, aluminium,
paper and glass. Since we are targeting for household solid waste, separation
for food waste is a must. It is not convenience to have four different bins in a
house.
iii. The existing recycle bin in market is less attractive.

4. Justification of design/materials used/implications

The idea is to create a bin which low cost, practical and save-spacing. So, for the bin,
we highlighted that features and put it into our design. For material used, we choose
plastic because due to their relatively low cost, ease of manufacture, versatile and
impervious to water, it is very suitable for the product. Hence, by using this material it
can be lighter. Since it is an indoor bin, we do have to make it more practical and easy
to handle. It is also portable since the design is to add a small tire at the bottom of the
bin and make it very suitable to place at home. Each part of the bin can be taken out
easily. This allows the user to clean the inside part or to take the department that is
desired (paper and glass for example) to the street containers without using a bag.
