JTC SAYS:
If you’re struggling to break out of the rock-based minor pentatonic approach to blues,
B.B. King is a great player to explore. Not only is he undeniably one of the greatest blues
musicians of all time, but his style is the perfect demonstration of how good blues soloing is
based around phrases relating to the underlying chords, not scales.
In this solo, Kirk uses both A major pentatonic (A B C# E F#) and A minor pentatonic (A C
D E G) but they’re only a part of his melodic palette. Notice how he mostly uses A major
pentatonic over the A7 chords. The C# note (major 3rd) is in the chord, and the F# note is
the sweet-sounding major 6th. The little triangle shape at the 10th-12th frets (see bar 6) is a
classic B.B. King shape.
As you can see, Kirk makes much more use of A minor pentatonic over the D9 chords, often
adding the flat 5th blue note (Eb). However, it’s important to understand why this works.
Compare the notes of A minor pentatonic (A C D E G) with the notes of D7 (D F# A C) and
D Mixolydian (D E F# G A B C). You can see why he often adds the B and F# notes to these
lines, can’t you?
Instead of the regular turnaround (E7-D7-A7-E7), this track has a 2-5-1 progression (Bm7-
E7-A7). This is preceded by the F#7 chord, creating 6-2-5-1. Don’t worry too much about
this; as you can see, Kirk plays his regular A major blues lines right through.
