Optimization method to decrease the RTWP

1. Introduction:
In Project X many sites suffered from High RTWP due to high number of HSUPA user numbers.

(We will take site G2303 as an example and the most affected sector is the 3 rd sector)

2. Classification:
RTWP is Received Total Wideband Power. Represents a measure of UMTS technology: the total
level of noise within the UMTS frequency band of any cell.

RTWP is related to uplink interference, and its monitoring helps control the call drops - mainly CS. It
also has importance in the capacity management, as it provides information for the Congestion
Control regarding Uplink Interference.

In UMTS, the uplink interference may vary due to several factors, such as the number of users in the
cell, the Service, Connection Types and Conditions of Radio, etc.

We know that RTWP can help us in checking the uplink interference, then we need to know its typical
values.

In a network is not loaded, normal, acceptable RTWP Average value is generally around -104.5 and
-105.5 dBm. Values around -95 dBm indicate that the cell has some uplink interferers. If the value is
around -85 dBm, the situation is ugly, with strong uplink interferers.

In our case we can see the Increase in the RTWP due to high number of HSUPA user numbers as
this site serving a very congested and important Area especially sector 3.
3. Action Taken:
As we know the RTWP is related to the Uplink interference and due to the high load on this site so I
decided to reduce the HSUPA load on the site by decreasing the HSUPA MAX load Factor.

The old value was 85% so I changed the value to 60% using the below command:

MOD UCELLHSUPA: CellId=XXX, MaxTargetUlLoadFactor=60;

And we noticed a great improvement in all the KPIs as shown in the below charts:

(Red line refer to after the action and Blue line refer to before the action)

We can see a great improvement in the RTWP after the action which lead to a great improvement in
the other KPIs.
HSUPA user number is almost the same.
CDR Improved a lot after the action
No noticeable impact on the PS UL traffic or the throughput.

4. Conclusion:
RTWP on of the most tricky problem in 3G as the increase in the RTWP in most of the cases due to
increase in the Uplink interference due to increase in the number of users also the increase in the
RTWP will always lead to increase in the CS & PS CDR plus the number of failures due to no-reply
will also increase so controlling the RTWP increase will always lead to improve in most of the KPI.
